The Division I Women's Soccer Committee discussed future championship sites and selection criteria during its February meeting in San Diego.
Members heard presentations from two groups bidding to host the 2006 and 2007 Women's College Cups. The committee will make its recommendation to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet in June. The 2005 championship will be at Texas A&M University, College Station, December 2 and 4.
Committee members discussed the concept of combining the women's championship with the Men's College Cup at a common site, but they agreed to retain separate finals at least through 2007, even though the 2006 and 2007 Men's and Women's College Cups will be conducted on the same weekend.
The committee also made a minor adjustment to selection criteria, recommending that "results against teams under consideration" be included as part of the secondary rather than primary criteria. That proposal will go before the cabinet in June as well.
In other actions, the women's soccer committee agreed to implement procedures the cabinet recommended regarding the Rating Percentage Index (RPI). The committee will release both the RPI it uses during the selection process and the final RPI (calculated after the end of the championship, taking into account NCAA tournament games) to conferences and independent institutions as soon as possible after the end of a championship. The committee will not release (either publicly or to the membership) any national or regional ratings, rankings or polls, per the cabinet's request.
The women¹s soccer committee also recommended to the cabinet that the committee be allowed to fly an official to an out-of-region game in any round of the tournament if there is not a qualified official (who is not from the conference of a participating team) within 300 miles of the site. The men¹s soccer committee made a similar request.
In addition, the committee adjusted the procedures used to determine game selections at sites where multiple games are conducted. Currently, the host institution may choose either the first or second game as the game in which its team will play, but now that option will be given to the highest-seeded team at the site. Seeded teams often are the host teams as well, but in cases where seeded teams travel, they now will be able to choose their preferred time slot.
