Texas wraps up sixth baseball title with sweep of Florida

Jul 4, 2005 5:54:47 PM

The trip to Omaha was tough for Texas, but the Longhorns found nothing but smooth sailing once they arrived in town.

The unseeded Longhorns -- after finishing fourth in the Big 12 Conference postseason tourney and surviving five elimination games in regional and super-regional play -- breezed through the Men's College World Series June 17-26 in Omaha to claim their sixth Division I Baseball Championship title, and second crown in four years.

Texas, whose pitchers posted a 1.40 earned-run average in surrendering only seven earned runs through five games, wrapped up its cruise through Omaha with a two-game sweep of Florida in the championship series.

The Longhorns paired pitching with the long ball to dominate the Gators.

Texas' starting pitchers in the two championship series games -- freshman Adrian Alaniz in Game 1 and Kyle McCulloch in Game 2 -- gave up only four runs on eight hits in their combined 13 innings, and then Texas reliever J. Brent Cox slammed the door on the Gators in both games, picking up two saves and putting an exclamation mark on the series by striking out designated hitter Stephen Barton for the final out.

Texas jumped out to 4-0 and 6-0 leads in the two games, using home runs by Will Crouch and David Maroul in Game 1 and sixth-inning shots by Chance Wheeless and Maroul again in Game 2 to give the Longhorn pitchers all the support they needed.

With the victory, Texas coach Augie Garrido collected his fifth title -- two at Texas in addition to three at Cal State Fullerton. The Longhorns now trail only Southern California's 12 national titles.

But even though Texas hovered near the top of the national polls through much of the season, the Longhorns' stumble through early postseason play -- including being sent on the road to play Mississippi in a super-regional -- left many observers' attention focused on the two other Big 12 Conference teams that advanced to the CWS: Nebraska and Baylor.

"We thought throughout the season we had a national championship-caliber team," Garrido said, discussing whether he believed Texas still could win the title after its Big 12 finish.

"I know you can't be national champions without things happening throughout the season. That's the spirituality of the game, and those things happened."

Nebraska, whose presence in its third CWS in five years helped generate record total attendance this year in Omaha, ultimately fell to Arizona State in what arguably was the most dramatic game in this year's tournament. The Sun Devils pushed that game into extra innings with first baseman Jeff Larish's record-tying three home runs and then finally won in the 11th inning, before eventually falling to Florida in a bracket final.

Meanwhile, Texas made an early statement by beating Baylor -- its first victory over the Bears in five tries this season -- on the opening weekend of play, then shut out top-ranked Tulane, 5-0, before beating Baylor again to advance to the championship series.

Texas reliever Cox picked up a win in the bracket final against the Bears, after Wheeless shook off a shoulder injury to end the game with a walk-off homer.

"When he hit that home run, I thanked him" Garrido said. "I thanked his mother and father, their mother and father and everybody that had anything to do with him being on this planet."

Wheeless provided another solo homer in the final game, but it was Maroul -- who hit .500 in 16 plate appearances through Texas' five CWS games and collected eight runs batted in -- who put that game out of reach with his three-run blast off Florida's Connor Falkenbach, clinching Most Outstanding Player honors in the process.

Five other Longhorns also were named to the all-tournament team, with catcher Taylor Teagarden and shortstop Seth Johnston joining designated hitter Crouch and pitchers McCulloch and Cox.

The two championship games attracted 25,958 fans on Saturday evening and 19,836 who braved 93-degree heat for Sunday afternoon's final. This year's total attendance of 263,475 fans through 15 games topped the previous mark of 260,091 in 2003, and also established a new mark for average attendance at 23,952.
