Arkansas' 17-point performance in the 200-meter dash -- keyed by a finish under 20 seconds by defending event winner Wallace Spearmon -- propelled the Razorbacks to their third straight Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships team title June 11.
The Razorbacks' three scorers in that event -- Spearmon and seniors Tyson Gay and Omar Brown -- also teamed with Michael Grant to win the 400-meter relay, helping Arkansas to an 11-point victory over Florida in the team competition at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, California.
Spearmon, who had posted the only qualifying time below 20 seconds entering the championships, overcame a sore knee and then teammate Gay's 19.93 finish in the event semifinals one night earlier with his winning time of 19.91 -- the fastest time in the world this year and just short of the meet record of 19.87 seconds.
"It was awesome and it sealed the meet," Arkansas sprints and hurdles coach Lance Brauman said of Spearmon's performance. "Wallace has been banged up for the past month and he was able to put a good one together in the finals of the NCAA championships."
"I had to step up when it counted and help the team," said Spearmon, a sophomore who said he will compete professionally after claiming a total of four NCAA indoor and outdoor track titles. "On the straightaway I looked over and saw Tyson and (LSU freshman Xavier) Carter (who finished second), so I knew I was in a good spot. I couldn't have asked for a better ending. It's like a Disney movie."
Arkansas led during most of the early competition, but saw Florida take a brief lead at mid-evening of the final night of the championships when the Gators' Kerron Clement posted one of the meet's two record performances and repeated as 400-meter hurdles champ with a 47.56-second victory.
But the Gators' advantage lasted only about 15 minutes, as Arkansas outscored Florida, 17-2, in the 200-meter final.
"Florida gave us a great meet and really pushed us with everything they had," said Razorbacks head coach John McDonnell, who now has coached Arkansas to an unprecedented 41 indoor and outdoor team titles. "I would rank this meet as a close second to the NCAA indoor meet (earlier this year, when Arkansas outscored the Gators by 10 points despite failing to score in two of its strongest events).
"We were so well-balanced and everyone gave 100 percent, but that's what I've come to expect. We don't like to lose. It's a tradition that's been handed down by teams from the past. I think this team is one of the great ones and people will compare them to the squads from 1984-85 and 1994-95."
That Razorback balance resulted in 29 points in the sprints, 22 points in distance events (including Peter Kosgei's second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run) and nine points in field events.
LSU, which posted the meet's other record with its 2:59.59 victory in the 1,600- meter relay, finished third in the team competition. Freshman Reginald Dardar and senior Bennie Brazell built a slight lead for the Tigers through the first half of the relay, then saw Carter and Olympian Kellie Willie ease past UCLA's 17-year-old record in the event.
"My team blessed me with a lead, so I felt like I had to hold onto it," Carter said. "I had a lot of good runners behind me, like Kerron Clement and a few others."
Another of those "good runners" was Baylor Olympian Darold Williamson, who earlier in the evening won the 400-meter dash.
Florida's Josh Walker joined Spearmon and Clement in successful defenses of individual titles, again winning the 110-meter hurdles. Another of last year's titlists, Arizona's Robert Cheseret, won the 10,000-meter run but finished sixth in the event he won last year, the 5,000-meter run, behind a 1-2 finish by Stanford's Ryan Hall and Ian Dobson.
Stanford added a victory by Michael Robertson in the discus throw to join Arkansas, Brigham Young, Florida and Texas as double event winners at the championships.
A reported crowd of 10,200 saw the final night of competition in Sacramento to cap the first year of the championships' scheduled three-year run in that city.
