Facilities: Longwood University has announced plans to construct two competition facilities for field hockey, women's lacrosse, and men's and women's soccer. The $5.1 million project is targeted for completion this September for the upcoming fall 2005 seasons. "This project will give four field sports outstanding facilities for intercollegiate practice and competition," said Longwood Athletics Director Rick Mazzuto. "It will give our coaches great opportunities to recruit quality student-athletes and prepare our teams for success at the Division I level." The new facilities will feature both a synthetic turf field for field hockey and women's lacrosse, and a natural grass turf field for men's and women's soccer. Each field will have lights, a scoreboard, covered press platforms and covered bleacher seating for about 350 people, with additional seating on a grass incline. "These new facilities represent the commitment Longwood is making in its quest for Division I status," said Longwood President Patricia Cormier. "Longwood will be a highly desirable place for competitive play." Longwood will compete during 2005-06 in the designated year three of the institution's four-year NCAA Division I reclassification toward official Division I certification in September 2007.
