Milestones: Pat Summitt, women's basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, became the winningest coach in all of college basketball March 22 when her Lady Vols won their second-round game of the women's tournament, 75-54, over Purdue University. The win gave the 31-year coach (all at Tennessee) an 880-171 career mark, one win better than Dean Smith, who retired in 1997 after a 35-year stint as the men's coach at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The win also keeps Summitt's record alive as having coached her team at least to the Sweet Sixteen in all 24 years of the women's tournament. The Lady Vols have won six national championships and 24 Southeastern Conference regular-season and tournament titles under Summitt's watch, and Summitt-coached teams have advanced to 15 Women's Final Fours ... Florida International University celebrated baseball coach Danny Price's 1,000th career win by presenting him with a framed jersey and a commemorative home plate before the Golden Panthers' March 11 game against Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick. Price reached the plateau with a win the previous day against Quinnipiac University. Florida International also announced it will retire Price's uniform number 21. "I was surprised to have my number retired at this time," the coach said. "I am very thankful for what this university has done for me and my family. I look forward to many years of coaching and the future" ... Hampton University softball head coach Tiny L. Laster Jr. captured his 450th win March 17 as the Lady Pirates split a pair of contests with Lafayette College.
