Miscellaneous: Monmouth University is offering a media fellowship entitled, "Academics and Athletics: How Both Scholar and Athlete, Especially Women, Can Win In Division I" April 18-19 on its campus. The fellowship is sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in Washington, D.C. Monmouth is the first university to offer an athletics media fellowship since CASE initiated the competitive program more than a decade ago. Marilyn McNeil, athletics director at Monmouth and fellowship organizer, said the speakers and panel discussions will focus on how Division I schools can work to develop the "scholar" in the scholar-athlete, and to support women athletes. "The CASE fellowship this spring will give sports media an opportunity to step away from covering the competition for two days and explore with us many of the academic and social issues surrounding high-level Division I college athletics." The program will have a general focus on both academics and women's issues, and panels of student-athletes, scholars, academicians and others will discuss controversial issues surrounding academic and peer pressure, recruitment and Title IX. Among speakers will be Judy Sweet, NCAA vice-president for championships and senior woman administrator. Another highlight of the event will be an opportunity for reporters to go "one-on-one" with a Monmouth scholar-athlete for practice, a tour and informal conversation. For more information on the fellowship and instructions on how to apply, contact Petra Ludwig in Monmouth public affairs at 732/263-5507 or via e-mail at pludwig@monmouth.edu.
