Tianna Madison's victory in the long jump and a 17-point effort in the 60-yard dash powered Tennessee to its first team title at the Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 11-12 at Arkansas.
Those performances propelled the Lady Vols to a slim six-point lead over Florida entering the meet's final event, the 1,600-meter relay, where Tennessee's second-place finish established the final margin of victory, 46-36.
The Lady Vols captured the crown despite defending 800-meter run champion Nicole Cook's inability to qualify for the final in that event because of a strained hamstring.
"It just shows a lot of character on the part of our team in being able to win this after losing Nicole Cook to injury," said Tennessee coach J. J. Clark.
All 10 of Tennessee's competitors earned all-America honors at the meet, including Toyin Olupona, Madison and Courtney Champion, who finished second, third and sixth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Olupona was runner-up for the second straight year.
"It was a great performance in the 60," Clark said. "Toyin is a veteran, and her leadership really came through. Early in the season, she was not on her 'A' game, but she regrouped and closed out the indoor season in very impressive fashion."
Clark also singled out Madison and Champion for praise, but credited the entire team for the victory.
"We got those kinds of performances all weekend long, from everybody," he said. "It's also a great ending and a big relief for Nicole, even though she couldn't run. She helped out any way she could, encouraging her teammates and displaying great character that you expect from your team captain."
Florida senior Candice Scott successfully defended her title in the weight throw and reset her own collegiate mark with a toss of 24.17 meters (79 feet, 33/ 4 inches), and the Gators also were able to keep the pressure on Tennessee with Tiandra Ponteen's win in the 400-meter dash.
"I'm very pleased," said Florida coach Tom Jones about the Gators' third straight runner-up finish at the championships. "Obviously, you would like to win, but we have always over-acheived at this meet and this year was no different."
Scott's title was her third in indoor competition and made her a 10-time all-American, while Ponteen is now a five-time all-American.
"I was just elated for Tiandra and Candice," he added. "Candice is probably the most phenomenal athlete I have ever coached at Florida."
Miami (Florida) finished third, just four points behind Florida, with former Gator Kimberli Barrett's victory in the shot put. Nebraska finished three points behind Miami in fourth place with Anne Shadle's victory in the mile run and Ashley Selig's pentathlon win.
Georgia Tech's Chaunte Howard was a repeat winner in the high jump.
