Georgia reigns in relays to dethrone Auburn in swimming

Mar 28, 2005 4:00:41 PM

Georgia ended Auburn's three-year reign in women's swimming in convincing fashion, winning four individual events and all five relays en route to the team crown at the Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 17-19 at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

"It is a great night to be a Bulldog," said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle after the Saturday finals. "We came into this meet having to out-swim everyone, and we did. Hats off to our kids; they did everything they needed to do to bring home a championship. I think this is our strongest team ever."

Auburn had beaten Georgia in each of the last three years -- by wide margins in 2003 and 2004. But the Bulldogs reversed that this year, beating the Tigers, 609 1/ 2 to 492.

The title is Georgia's fourth and first since winning the closest championship in history in 2001 (by one and one-half points over Stanford). That crown in fact was Georgia's third straight, a string broken by Auburn the following year.

The four NCAA titles in women's swimming are the third-most behind Stanford (eight) and Texas (seven). The Bulldogs' point total this year is the most at a women's championship since 1993.

Sophomore Kara Lynn Joyce and junior Mary DeScenza each won two individual events and finished third and sixth, respectively, in the individual point standings. Joyce swept the freestyle sprints, while DeScenza won both butterfly events. Both swimmers also participated on four winning relays.

Georgia's relay sweep is the first in the meet's 24-year history. The 200-yard freestyle relay unit of Joyce, Paige Kearns, Andrea Georoff and Amanda Weir, and the 800-yard freestyle group of DeScenza, Joyce, Elizabeth Hill and Weir set meet records, as did the 400-yard medley relay team of Samantha Arsenault, Sarah Poewe, DeScenza and Weir.

"Winning all five relays is an unbelievable accomplishment," said Bauerle. "That is 200 points before you ever swim an individual event. We ask these kids to swim their individual events and then the relays, and we never had a letdown, not for one second."

This year's meet was swum in the traditional short-course-yards format. Last year's meet was conducted in short-course meters, since 2004 was an Olympic year. The NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee voted to conduct Division I championships in Olympic years in short-course meters beginning in 2000.

Georgia jumped to a 73-point lead after the first day, buoyed by the 200-yard freestyle relay win to open the meet, and Joyce's successful defense of her 50-yard freestyle title. Georgia has owned the latter event recently, with Maritza Correia winning in 2002 and 2003, and Courtney Shealy in 2000.

"We started this meet off with a great night (on Thursday), and we just kept rolling after that," said Bauerle, who was named coach of the year for the fourth time. "If we had not gotten off to that start, it would have been a whole different meet. This championship is especially nice for this group after three second places."

DeScenza's win in the 200-yard butterfly was her third straight in the event.

"The race wasn't as fast as I would have liked, but a win's a win," she said. "It's been a hard three days of competing, and I really feel I've done my part for the team victory."

Auburn swimmers won four individual events, with Kristy Coventry wining three. She won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.54, which is the second-fastest performance of all time. Coventry also won both individual medleys. Margaret Hoelzer was the Tigers' other winner in the 200-yard freestyle, beating Georgia's Weir.

Emily Mason (500-yard freestyle) and Marshi Smith (100-yard backstroke) were event winners for third-place Arizona. Caroline Bruce of Stanford won both breaststrokes to help the Cardinal finish fifth in the team standings behind Florida.

Southern Methodist's Flavia Rigamonti won the 1,650-yard freestyle for a third time.
