Duke sweeps golf hardware behind decisive third round

Jun 6, 2005 1:30:46 PM

Duke swept team and individual honors at the 2005 Division I Women's Golf Championships May 17-20 at the Sunriver, Oregon, Meadows Course.

The Blue Devils won their third team title in seven years, while sophomore Anna Grzebien became the third Duke golfer to take medalist honors since 2001.

Duke, which also won team titles in 1999 and 2002, began the final round with an eight-shot lead and coasted to a five-stroke win over defending champion UCLA. Auburn was a shot behind the Bruins in third.

"These gals showed a lot of maturity," said Duke coach Dan Brooks after his team battled tough course conditions. "We were most united all year at the end when we needed it. Under these conditions, we had the patience we needed to win."

Rain pelted players for two hours early in the second round, followed by gusty and chilly winds the remainder of the day. The players enjoyed sunny skies in the third round, though it was windy and cold. The winds were up again in round four, and the leaders had to play through rain in the afternoon.

Auburn and Pepperdine were tied for the lead after the second round. Duke began the third round nine shots back in fifth place, but a tournament-low 278 vaulted the Blue Devils into the lead. The 6-under-par aggregate was seven strokes better than any round by any team in the tournament.

Part of the reason Duke went low was Grzebien's 6-under-par 65, which was four shots better than any golfer had posted to that point. She began the day tied for 17th place, four shots back of the leaders. The eventual medalist's third round ironically began with a bogey, but she recovered with three birdies on the front nine and four more on the back.

Grzebien joins Candy Hannemann (2001) and Virada Nirapathpongporn (2002) as Duke medalists. Her lead in the fourth round shrank to one shot over Virginia's Leah Wigger, who was in the clubhouse at 3-over par, but Grzebien birdied the 12th hole and made two-putt pars on the final two holes to hold on for the win.

Grzebien entered the tournament as the Blue Devils' third-ranked player in terms of stroke average. She tied for 49th at last year's NCAA championships, and her first collegiate title came two weeks ago at the NCAA East Regional.

"I didn't look at the scoreboard once," the Duke sophomore said about the final round. "I just put my head down and walked past the scoreboards. I didn't want to look at the numbers. I've played well, but I'm just starting to get where everything is coming together and I'm shooting better numbers."

UCLA freshman Amie Cochran and Duke's Brittany Lang were a stroke behind Wigger, followed by Auburn's Nicole Hage. Cochran and Oklahoma State's Annie Thurman-Young posted the best fourth-round scores with 68s. Tennessee shot the best team aggregate in the final round with a 285, which lifted the Lady Vols from a 10th-place tie to a tie for sixth.

Duke's title sweep represents the 11th time in the history of the championships and fourth in the last six years that one school has taken all the hardware.

Only three teams -- Auburn, Pepperdine and California -- scored below 300 in all four rounds. Even Duke posted a 303 in the second round, when the weather was at its worst. The scoring average for that day in fact was 77.20 for the field, almost two full strokes higher than any other day. Only Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas and Dana Je of Ohio State broke par in the second round. Each registered 1-under 70s.

There were 17 other rounds under par during the four-day tournament, including nine in round four. The field registered seven eagles, including Tennessee's Sarah Bonner-Shanks, whose first-round 79 included an ace on the fourth hole.
