NCAA membership totals for 2005-06 show only slight adjustments from last year, as a record sum of 1,303 institutions, conferences, provisional members and affiliated members call the Association home. The total is 11 more than last year, though the number of active members (1,027) decreased by one.
By division, active membership stayed generally the same. The Division I total of 326 institutions is the same as it has been since 2003-04, though there was some subdivision movement as Division I-AA lost three institutions to I-AAA. The Division II total of 282 is up one from 2003-04, while Division III decreased from 421 schools to 419.
There are no provisional members scheduled to become active members in 2005-06. Spelman College will become an active member in Division III in 2006-07. Provisional members eligible for active membership in 2007-08 are Finlandia University, Mount Mary College and the University of Texas at Tyler. All will be classified in Division III.
In 2008-09, Central State University, Claflin University and Palm Beach Atlantic University will be eligible for active membership in Division II. Provisional members slated to become active Division III institutions that year are Crown College, Keystone College, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Mount Aloysius College, Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley College and Tri-State University.
Utah Valley State College is scheduled to become a Division I member in 2009-10. Also that year, Division II is expected to welcome California State University, Monterey Bay; Langston University; the University of Mary; North Georgia College & State University; and Notre Dame de Namur University. In Division III, Bethany Lutheran College, LaSierra University, Mitchell College, North Central University, Northwestern College, Presentation College, Purchase College and Salem College are slated for active membership that year.
Ten institutions have entered their exploratory years to determine if they want to pursue membership in Division II. They are Auburn University, Montgomery; Brevard College; Dixie State College of Utah; Flagler College; Georgia Southwestern and State University; Newman University; and Voorhees College. Point Park University, Seton Hill College and the University of Texas at the Permian Basin are exploring both Division II and Division III. Ten institutions also are reclassifying out of Division II, eight to Division I and two to Division III.
Other schools entering exploratory years in Division III are Briarcliffe College; the University of Cincinnati Clermont College; the State University of New York at Cobleskill; Doane College; Franciscan University of Steubenville; Geneva College; Lancaster Bible College; Lincoln Christian College & Seminary; Lyndon State College; the State University of New York at Morrisville; Pennsylvania State Harrisburg; Saint Vincent College; Spalding University; College of St. Joseph in Vermont; and St. Joseph's College (New York).
