Two sports -- football and women's basketball -- featured first-time winners in all three divisions.
On the gridiron, James Madison won the I-AA championship in just its first try, beating a Montana team that had been to the championship game five times in the last 10 years. The Dukes got two touchdowns apiece from sophomores Maurice Fenner and Justin Rascati to seal their 31-21 victory.
In Division II, Valdosta State ruined Pittsburg State's bid for an unbeaten season with a 36-31 upset. The Blazers, whose defense is nicknamed "the Black Swarm," forced four turnovers. Meanwhile, Division III's Linfield did go unbeaten, culminating a perfect season with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the championship game.
On the basketball court, Baylor beat three No. 1 seeds on its way to the school's first title in the sport. The Bears, themselves a No. 2 seed, downed top-seeded North Carolina, LSU and Michigan State, the latter in the championship game.
Washburn used a suffocating defense to wrap up the crown in Division II, holding Seattle Pacific to just 20 percent shooting in the first half of the title game to secure a 70-53 victory.
The Division III women's basketball crown went to first-time winner Millikin. Up by just four points at the half, the Big Blue outscored Randolph-Macon by 16 in the final frame to deliver a 70-50 triumph.
