Notre Dame student-athletes combined to go 44-10 in the championships, which was enough to down Ohio State, 173-171, in the final team standings. St. John's (New York) finished third with 162 points.
Alicja Kryczalo, Notre Dame's three-time women's foil champion, clinched a share of the team title despite losing her final match, 15-5, to Harvard's Emily Cross.
Notre Dame captured its seventh national title despite having only 11 student-athletes in the four-day competition. Teams are allowed to qualify a maximum of 12 competitors at the national championships. Notre Dame became the first institution to win a fencing championship without having its full allotment of fencers. Ohio State also had only 11 student-athletes in the field.
Ohio State held a 24-point advantage after the men's bouts even though Notre Dame had two individual champions -- Patrick Ghattas in the men's saber (15-12 over Sergey Isayenko of St. John's) and Michal Sobierij in the epee [15-13 over Marek Petraszek of Wayne State (Michigan)].
Ohio State's Boaz Ellis won the foil, 15-8, over New York University's Gabriel Sinkin.
In women's foil, Kryczalo dominated the round-robin portion of the competition by going 21-2, which included a 9-0 mark before falling to Harvard's Cross in the final.
Emily Jacobson of Columbia-Barnard won the women's saber, and Anna Garina of Wayne State was the women's epee winner.
Kryczalo, Andrea Amment and Sobierij became four-time all-Americans at the end of the competition.
