Wayne State (Michigan) has selected Frank H. Wu as faculty athletics representative.
Wu, who succeeds Mel Small, has been dean of the law school since this spring. Before accepting the post at Wayne State, Wu spent nine years at Howard, where he was a professor of law. He also has taught law at Michigan and Columbia and was a fellow at the Stanford School of Law.
Author of "Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White" (2002) and co-author of the textbook "Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment" (2001), Wu most recently has served on the Board of Professional Responsibility for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and chair of the D.C. Human Rights Commission.
Wu is a 1991 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. He earned a bachelor's degree in writing from Johns Hopkins.
Robert J. Birgeneau was named as president at California, effective in October. Birgeneau has been president at the University of Toronto ... Cal State Stanislaus President Marvalene Hughes retired. Hughes will serve as interim president during the 2004-05 academic year ... Philip A. Smith, president at Providence, will step down in the spring.
Rob Colbert was named as interim director of athletics at Keene State. Colbert, who will continue as head men's basketball coach at the school, succeeds John Ratliff ... Chicago State chose Albert Avant as athletics director. Avant has been with the school since 1988 ... Western Kentucky extended the contract of Athletics Director Wood Selig through 2007-08.
Iona promoted Jamie Fogarty to senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for student-athlete services and compliance ... Amy Weeks was chosen as senior woman administrator at Oklahoma State ... Texas-Arlington selected Debbie Garcia as senior woman administrator ... Kim Whitestone was appointed as senior associate athletics director for internal affairs and senior woman administrator at Charlotte. Charlotte named Darin Spease as senior associate athletics director for business affairs. The school also promoted Dan DeVos to associate athletics director for marketing and ticket operations and Tom Whitestone to associate athletics director for media relations. Football assistants -- Kutztown named Al Holcomb as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach to replace Rod Plummer. Holcomb has worked as linebackers coach and special teams coach at Bloomsburg for the past six years ... Tim Hauck was hired as safeties coach at Montana. Hauck played professionally in the NFL for 13 seasons. Montana also announced that defensive coordinator Jeff Hammerschmidt will coach cornerbacks after overseeing the safeties last season. Beyers and Astrauskas have been assistant track and field coaches at the school for two seasons ... Brad Moore resigned as head track and field coach at Pacific Lutheran, but he will continue as head cross country coach. Moore has guided the programs for the past 24 seasons. Pacific Lutheran announced Heather Kreier and Jerry Russell as co-head coaches for the 2004-05 season. Kreier has been with the school for one season and Russell has been an assistant for the past 15 years ... Steven Royster was elevated to head men's and women's coach at New Jersey City. Tsai, has been assistant director of media relations at UC Riverside for the past year.

North Texas football student-athlete Andrew Smith died in an automobile accident August 7. He was 21. Smith started 16 games at quarterback for the Mean Green and threw for 1,393 yards and eight touchdowns for his career.
Stephanie Meinig Rosfeld, an assistant volleyball coach at Cincinnati, died August 10. Rosfeld, who had been with the program for the past three years, graduated from the school in 2001. Rosfeld finished her career as the all-time leader in blocks for the school and for Conference USA. She also established the school record for the most games played in a career and ranks 10th on Cincinnati's career kills list.
