Mike Marcil has been named as commissioner for the Sunshine State Conference. Marcil succeeds Don Landry, who retired after 10 years as commissioner.
For the past seven years, Marcil has worked as commissioner of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He also has been an assistant athletics director at St. Thomas University in Florida, Creighton and Miami-Dade (Florida) Community College.
Marcil, who also completed a stint with the NCAA national office, has been active in NCAA governance, formerly serving as chair of the Division II Management Council and as a member of the Executive Committee.
Marcil earned a bachelor's degree in English at Creighton, a juris doctorate at Marquette and a master's degree in sports administration at St. Thomas (Florida).

Associations
The EA Sports Maui Invitational named Dave Gavitt as chair. Gavitt, who takes over for Wayne Duke, was co-founder and former chair of the Big East Conference, former chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee and head coach of the 1980 U.S. Men's Basketball Olympic Team. Hosted by Chaminade, the 2004 EA Sports Maui Invitational will be held November 22-24.
National office
Stacey Preston was hired as a manager of promotions and events at the national office. Preston has been special assistant to the executive director of athletics at Long Beach State.
Notables
Bob Robertson, football radio play-by-play announcer at Washington State, was named as the 2004 Chris Schenkel Award winner. The honor, presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, is given to a college football broadcaster on the local level who has excelled in the field and contributed to the community. Robertson is set to enter his 38th year calling Cougar football games. He also has served as the announcer for basketball games for the past 22 years ... The following former student-athletes recently were inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Hall of Fame: Gill Beck, Appalachian State, football; Dylann Duncan Ceriani, Brigham Young, volleyball; Terry Hoage, Georgia, football; Dave Rimington, Nebraska, football; Rolf Benirschke, UC Davis, football. The organization also recognized Ted Leland, director of athletics at Stanford, as the recipient of the 2004 Dick Enberg Award, which is given annually to an individual whose actions and commitments have furthered the meaning and reach of the academic all-America programs and/or the student-athlete while promoting the values of education and academics.
Former Morehead State men's basketball coach Bill Harrell died July 23. He was 76. Harrell guided the Morehead State program from 1969 to 1974 and also served as an assistant at Nebraska for three years.
Ben Martin, former football coach at Air Force, died July 24. Martin, 83, led the Falcons from 1958 to 1977.
Justin Williams, a football student-athlete at Oregon State, died in an automobile accident July 23. He was 19. Williams, a defensive back, was entering his red-shirt freshman season.
Former Oklahoma State football linebacker and current vice-president of football operations for the NFL's Green Bay Packers, Mark Hatley, died July 27. He was 54. Hatley was an assistant with the Cowboys from 1973 to 1975 and also coached at Tulsa, TCU, Baylor and the NFL's New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.
Former Arizona State men's basketball coach Steve Patterson died of lung cancer July 28. He was 56. Patterson helped UCLA capture national championships in 1969, 1970 and 1971. He went on to play professionally in the NBA as well as lead the program at Arizona State from 1985 to 1989.
Former Houston football student-athlete Patterson Owens died August 2. He was 28. Owens was a lineman for the Cougars for two years.
Edward J. Bock, former Iowa State football student-athlete, died July 31. He was 87. A National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame inductee, Bock started all 26 games of his career with the Cyclones. The all-America lineman later served as an assistant coach at the school. He joined Monsanto Chemical Company in 1941, and retired in 1972 as president and CEO.
John Corbally, former president at Syracuse and the University of Illinois system, died July 23. Corbally was 79.
James E. Hoff, chancellor and former president at Xavier (Ohio), died July 23. Hoff was 72.
Former Dartmouth head baseball coach Ulysses J. (Tony) Lupien Jr. died July 9 at the age of 87.
Hugh J. Phillips, former president at Mount St. Mary's, died July 11. Phillips was 97.
