Colorado College has elevated Julie Soriero to director of athletics. Soriero takes over for Joel Nielsen, who became athletics director at South Dakota.
Since November, Soriero has served as interim director of athletics. She joined the school in 1999 as head women's basketball coach, but relinquished those duties two years later to focus full-time on administrative duties. Soriero has been senior associate athletics director since 2001.
In addition, Soriero formerly completed coaching stints at Haverford, Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, and Pennsylvania.
Soriero earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Penn State in 1974 and earned a master's degree in sports psychology from Temple in 1982.

Richard Collings, vice-chancellor for academic affairs and professor of political science and public affairs at Western Carolina, was named as president at Wayne State (Nebraska) in May ... David L. Harlow resigned as president at Jacksonville ... Kentucky State selected Mary Evans Sias as president, effective this spring. Caine, who has been president at the school since 1989, is a former member of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council (1999-02) and formerly served as vice-chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council (1997-98).
Directors of athletics
Don A. "Doc" Parham, director of athletics at Southeastern Oklahoma State, announced plans to retire, effective July 1. Parham, who will continue with the school in the office of university advancement, has been athletics director for 34 years ... South Florida director of athletics Lee Roy Selmon resigned. Selmon will continue with the school as its chief athletics fund-raiser ... Air Force named Michael Bloomfield as athletics director ... Boston U.'s Gary Strickler announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective at the end of the school year ... Montana director of athletics Wayne Hogan resigned. Hogan has led the athletics program since November 1995 ... Denis Kanach was hired as athletics director at Randolph-Macon. Kanach has been senior associate director and chief operating officer for athletics at Georgetown.
Assistant directors of athletics
Stephen F. Austin promoted John Branch to assistant athletics director for external affairs. Branch has been coordinator of athletics operations at the school for seven years ... Jeff Falardeau was chosen as an assistant athletics director at Cabrini. Since 2002, Falardeau has worked as an assistant men's soccer coach at Potsdam State.

Men's basketball -- Briar Cliff's Mike Beard resigned as head coach ... Frank Ferraro was named as head coach at Waynesburg ... Steve Hesser was chosen as head coach at Drury ... Danny Nee, head coach at Duquesne, signed a two-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Nee has led the program for three seasons ... North Carolina Central will not renew the contract of head coach Phil Spence ... Robert Gay, head coach at MacMurray for the past 29 years, stepped down, but will retain responsibilities as director of athletics at the school. Gay led the basketball program to two Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and also completed tenures as head coach of the soccer, baseball, cross country and tennis teams. Darrin DeNeve, an assistant coach for the past four years, was tabbed as Gay's successor ... Southern Methodist released head coach Mike Dement after nine seasons. Robert Lineberg, an assistant coach with the program for seven years, was named as interim head coach ... Florida International released Donnie Marsh as head coach and reassigned him within the university. Marsh has guided the program for four years ... Rick Pitino, third-year head coach at Louisville, was awarded a contract extension through 2010 ... New England's David Labbe resigned as men's basketball and softball coach.
Women's basketball -- Lisa Carlsen resigned as head coach at Nebraska-Omaha. Carlsen has guided the program for four seasons ... Linda Wunder will not have her contract renewed after five years as head coach at Eastern Illinois ... Mercyhurst will not renew the contract of head coach Bo Kuntz, who has guided the program for three years ... Mary Orsted resigned as head coach at Macalester, effective March 31. Orsted has been head coach for the past six years ... Marian Washington, head coach at Kansas, retired. Washington led the Jayhawks to seven conference championships and six conference tournament titles in a tenure that began in 1973 ... Hamline will not renew the contract of head coach Lisa Parsons ... Dave Johnson resigned as head coach at Augsburg.
Field hockey -- Marianne Beshara resigned as head coach at Wittenberg. Beshara, who has led the program to a 39-9 record during her tenure, was recognized as the North Coast Athletic Conference coach of the year in 2000, 2002 and 2003 ... Stevens Tech hired Jessica Reed as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity play in the fall. Reed has been an assistant at Drexel for the past two seasons ... Tanya Stonehouse was named as head coach at Becker to replace Melody Stockdale. Stonehouse has been an assistant with the program for the past year.
Football -- Fordham promoted Ed Foley to head coach to replace Dave Clawson, who resigned after five seasons to take over the program at Richmond. For the past five years, Foley has served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Clawson, who succeeds Jim Reid at Richmond, guided Fordham to the 2002 Patriot League championship. Reid went to Syracuse to become the defensive line coach ... Kent State's Dan Pees resigned after six seasons as head coach to become linebackers coach for the New England Patriots ... Mike Lazusky was elevated to head coach at Hiram to succeed Mike Meyer, who resigned. Lazusky has been defensive coordinator for the program ... Doug Martin was promoted to head coach at Kent State. Most recently, Martin, who replaces Dean Pees, has been offensive coordinator ... La Salle's Archie Stalcup resigned as head coach ... Bowie State named Michael J. Lynn Jr. as head coach to replace Henry Frazier. Lynn has been director of football operations and offensive line coach at Morgan State ... Rick Ulrich accepted duties as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Ursinus ... Derrick Nix was added as tight ends coach and Ron McCrone was chosen as defensive backs coach at Southern Mississippi. Men's and women's golf -- Don Meadows resigned as head men's and women's coach at McNeese State.

Women's soccer -- George Mason hired Diane Drake as head coach to succeed Jac Cicala. Drake was head coach at Georgetown for five seasons ... Greensboro appointed Tracy Ducar as head coach. For the past three seasons, Ducar has been competing in the now-defunct WUSA professional women's soccer league and was a member of the 1999 World Cup championship team.
Women's soccer assistants -- Steve Golas was hired as an assistant coach at Angelo State. Golas was head men's soccer coach at William Penn last season ... Michele O'Brien was selected as an assistant coach at New York University.
Softball -- New England appointed Joan Howard as head coach ... Christin Santiago was hired as head coach at Newbury. Santiago, who formerly competed on the softball squad at Connecticut, current works as a sport manager at the Newton (Massachusetts) YMCA.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Mike Davis was chosen as men's and women's diving coach at Lafayette.
Men's and women's tennis -- Mark Moshos was awarded responsibilities as head men's coach at Franklin & Marshall.
Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Jennifer Crabtree Gandel was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Wellesley.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Pete Volkert resigned as head women's coach at Manhattan ... Tom Symons resigned after three seasons as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to become head coach at Marietta.
Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Angelo State chose Jennifer Salmans as an assistant coach. Salmans has been an assistant at Colorado State-Pueblo since 2000 and also has been assistant to the athletics director at the school since 2001.
Staff
Sports information assistant -- Mike Ross was selected as assistant director of athletics media relations at Wichita State. Ross has been a student assistant and a graduate assistant in the athletics media relations office at the school for the past three years.
Strength and conditioning -- Lindsay Massengale was named as strength and conditioning coach at San Francisco.
Conferences
The Capital Athletic Conference elected Bill Finney to a two-year term as president. Finney, athletics director at Marymount, has been vice-president for the conference and succeeds Ed Hegmann of Mary Washington. Scott Devine, athletics director at St. Mary's (Maryland), was elected as vice-president.
School name changes
Missouri Southern State has officially changed its name to Missouri Southern State University-Joplin, effective immediately.
Deaths
Montclair State head men's and women's track and field coach Gerald "Bennie" Benson Jr. died February 20. He was 36. Benson had guided the programs for nine years and was the 2002 NCAA men's indoor national coach of the year.
Christopher Waddell, a walk-on football offensive lineman at Northwestern State, died March 1 after collapsing during a workout. Waddell, 18, also was a discus thrower for the school's track and field program, but had not competed in a meet.
Frederick M. Binder, former president at Juniata, Whittier and Hartwick, died January 28. Binder was 83.
Mt. St. Vincent president emerita Doris Smith died January 19. Smith was 73.
