Northern Arizona has selected Albin Polonyi as head men's and women's tennis coach.
Polonyi has spent the past year and a half as an assistant men's tennis coach at Michigan State. He also worked as an assistant professional at the Gasparilla Inn in Florida in 2001 and 2002. In addition, Polonyi guided the women's program at Bemidji State to its first conference championship in 1998-99.
Polonyi played collegiately at Georgia before finishing his career at Boise State. As a starter for the Bulldogs, Polonyi reached the semifinal round of the 1993 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships in doubles play. At Boise State, he was a two-time all-American (1993, 1996) and served as captain of the 1997 squad. He also has competed professionally.
Polonyi earned a master's degree in literature and creative writing from Bemidji State.

Von Arx has been an associate professor of history and dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill.
Directors of athletics
Brandeis' Jeff Cohen resigned as athletics director. Cohen joined the school as a member of the development office in 1983 and has been director of athletics since 1986. The school appointed Sheryl Souza, associate athletics director and head volleyball coach, as interim athletics director ... Steven E. Nelson was named as director of athletics at Wisconsin-Superior, effective March 1. Nelson has been commissioner for the America West Hockey League since 2000 and formerly was head men's hockey coach and athletics director at the school ... Texas State released Greg LaFleur as director of athletics ... Kelly Sue Morrison was appointed as athletics director at Sweet Briar. Morrison, who succeeds Milly MacDonell, has been an assistant professor and head tennis coach at the school since 1994 ... Valparaiso's William Steinbrecher announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective July 31 ... Tom Tallach, assistant athletics director at Texas A&M-Commerce, was named as interim athletics director at the school. Tallach takes over for Paul Peak, who was granted a medical leave of absence ... North Carolina extended the contract of Dick Baddour by three years until 2007. Baddour has guided the Tar Heel athletics department since June 1997 ... John McCutcheon was hired as director of athletics at Massachusetts. McCutcheon, who succeeds Ian McCaw, has been athletics director at Cal Poly for 12 years.
Associate directors of athletics
Northern Iowa's Sandra Williamson announced plans to retire as associate athletics director for administration and students. Williamson has been with the school since 1978 and formerly coached the school's women's basketball team from 1978 to 1980 ... St. John's (New York) appointed John Diffley as senior associate athletics director for administration, Rick Cole as senior associate athletics director for external affairs and Patrick Elliott as senior associate athletics director for planning and internal operations.
Coaches
Baseball -- Tim Briggs resigned as head baseball coach and football defensive coordinator at Susquehanna. Briggs has guided the baseball program for five seasons and has served as an assistant football coach for the past eight seasons ... Rick Heller, head coach at Northern Iowa, signed a contract extension through 2007 ... Susquehanna chose Matt Karchner as interim head coach.
Baseball assistants -- Carroll hired Ted Brzenk as an assistant coach. Brzenk, who currently serves as head baseball coach at Greendale (Wisconsin) High School, was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2003 ... Matt Ward assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Mars Hill.
Men's basketball -- Utah head coach Rick Majerus announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the season ... Clark Maloney was named as head coach at Salem International. Since last April, Maloney has been interim head coach at the school ... Briarcliffe chose Don Mackay as head coach ... Navy head coach Don DeVoe announced plans to retire at the end of the season. DeVoe has guided the program for 12 seasons ... Western Carolina head coach Steve Shurina signed a two-year contract extension. Shurina has been head coach for three seasons ... Michael Holton, head coach at Portland, was awarded a five-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season. Holton is his third season as head coach.
Women's basketball -- Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt signed a four-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Summitt has led the school to six national championships in 30 seasons as head coach ... Ken Martinez was named as head coach at Briarcliffe.
Field hockey -- Jill Meiring was promoted to head coach at Transylvania to succceed Beth Lucas, who will continue with the program as an assistant coach. Meiring has been an assistant for the past two seasons and also will continue as an assistant women's basketball coach at the school.
Football -- Maurice Forte was named as head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Forte, who formerly was head coach at Norfolk State, replaces Lee Hardman ... Wisconsin-Stout promoted Todd Strop to head coach. Strop, who replaces Ed Meierkort, has been defensive coordinator for the past six seasons ... Florida Atlantic's Howard Schnellenberger was awarded a two-year contract extension through the 2009 season. Schnellenberger has guided the program since its inception in 1998 and led the school to the Division I-AA playoffs this past season ... Cornell named Jim Knowles as head coach. Knowles, who formerly was an assistant with the school from 1988-96, spent the past season as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi ... Scott Westering was chosen as head coach at Pacific Lutheran to succeed his father, Frosty Westering, who retired at the end of the season. Scott Westering has worked as an assistant with the program for 23 seasons and has been offensive coordinator since 1983 ... Catholic selected Tom Clark as head coach. Clark, who formerly guided the program from 1994-00, has been defensive coordinator and secondary coach at William and Mary ... Louisiana-Lafayette signed head coach Rickey Bustle to a two-year contract extension through the 2008 season. Bustle has led the team since December 2001 ... David Bailiff was hired as head coach at Texas State to replace Manny Matsakis, who was released. Since 2001, Bailiff has served as an assistant at TCU and has been lead defensive coordinator there since 2002 ... Wyoming's Joe Glenn signed a one-year contract extension through 2008 as head coach. Glenn took over the Cowboys' program after the 2002 season ... Central Connecticut State appointed Tom Masella as head coach to replace Paul Schudel. For the past two seasons, Masella has worked as defensive coordinator at Massachusetts.
Football assistants -- Joe Robinson was tabbed as defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator at Arizona. Robinson has been special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Central Florida ... LSU chose Bobby Williams an assistant coach. Williams was wide receivers coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions last year. ... Texas selected Greg Robinson as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and Dick Tomey as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach. Robinson resigned January 13 after serving as defensive coordinator for the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs for the three seasons. Tomey was an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL last season ... Keith Uperesa was hired as tight ends coach at Utah. Last year, Uperesa was a volunteer coach at El Camino College and formerly was an assistant at Southern California and Idaho State ... Miami (Florida) promoted Dan Werner to offensive coordinator to replace Rob Chudzinski, appointed Tim Walton as defensive backs coach and selected Mario Cristobal as tight ends coach. Werner has spent the past three seasons as quarterbacks coach. Walton was defensive backs coach at LSU last season and succeeds Mark Stoops. For the past three years, Cristobal has worked as offensive line coach at Rutgers ... Marshall Hayes resigned as offensive line coach at Grambling ... Morin, a 2000 graduate of Colgate, currently is a survey archaeologist at the Public Archeology Laboratory in Rhode Island, and Ewing was an all-Northeast-10 Conference tight end from 2000 to 2003 as a member of the Bryant football squad. Dave Paganetti Jr. has been wide receivers coach at North Kingstown (Rhode Island) High School. The school also announced Dave Paganetti Sr. will continue with the program as running backs coach. He has been at the school for four seasons and served as defensive line coach last season ... Vince Okruch was released as defensive coordinator at Colorado. Okruch has been with the program since 1999. The school selected Mike Hankwitz, who was defensive coordinator at Arizona and most recently was interim head coach for the Wildcats, as Okruch's successor ... Millsaps named Jake Peavey as offensive coordinator ... Auburn chose Jimmy Perry as director of football operations, Hugh Hall as offensive line coach and Phillip Lolley as director of high school relations ... Baylor defensive coordinator and linebackers coach John Goodner resigned. Goodner spent one season with the program ... Central Florida hired Joe Gilbert as offensive line coach and named D.J. McCarthy as receivers coach. Gilbert has been offensive line coach at Toledo for three seasons. McCarthy, receivers coach at Nevada since 2000, takes over for Sean Beckton, who was released ... Robert Lee and Dick Flynn were tabbed as assistant coaches at Eastern Michigan ... Guilford added Shanard Smith as defensive coordinator. Smith was secondary coach, pro liaison and football academic advisor at Elon during the 2003 season ... Brian Coon was awarded duties as offensive line coach and Jaime Elizondo was chosen as wide receivers coach at Hofstra ... Kalamazoo named Jaimie Zorbo as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Zorbo has been defensive line coach at the school ... Southern California added Carl Smith as tight ends coach and Ken Norton Jr. as a graduate assistant linebackers coach. Smith has been quarterbacks coach for the NFL's Cleveland Browns for the past three seasons. Norton was defensive coordinator at Hamilton (California) High School last season and also has been working as a radio and television football commentator and analyst. In addition, the school announced Rocky Seto, safeties coach, was moved to linebackers coach to replace Nick Holt ... Jay Boulware was selected as running backs coach at Stanford. The school also promoted Bill Cubit to offensive coordinator ... Steve Axman resigned as offensive coordinator at UCLA. Tom Cable, who joined the program as offensive line coach after the 2003 season, was chosen as Axman's successor ... Shannon Morrison was added as defensive coordinator and Gerard Wilcher was added as defensive backs coach at Lehigh ... Citadel appointed Dick Hopkins as defensive coordinator ... Jeff Schaum resigned after four seasons as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at McMurry to become athletics director and head football coach at Jefferson County (Florida) High School ... Ed Zaunbrecher, offensive coordinator at Florida, was moved to quarterbacks coach and Larry Fedora, an assistant coach with the school since 2002, was named as Zaunbrecher's successor at offensive coordinator.
Men's and women's golf -- Wellesley chose Bill McInerney Jr. as interim head women's coach to succeed Kimberly Lapointe. McInerney has been a professional golf instructor since 1994.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wentworth Institute of Technology named Jonathan Deptula as interim head coach. Since 2000, Deptula has been an assistant at the school.
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Colleen O'Hara was named as head women's coach at New Haven. O'Hara, a four-year letter-winner at Penn State, served as a women's lacrosse and athletics administration intern at Lock Haven during the fall of 2003.
Men's soccer -- Stony Brook hired Cesar Markovic as head coach. For the past four seasons, Markovic has guided the program at St. Peter's ... Kenneth Hassler was appointed as head coach at Pfeiffer ... Sam Skeels was hired as head coach at Adrian. Skeels also will serve as an assistant track and field coach.
Women's soccer -- Teikyo Post elevated Francisco Chavarria to head coach. Chavarria has been an assistant coach with the program since 2003 ... Idaho State selected Mark Salilsbury as head coach ... David Jones was tabbed as head coach at Temple ... Christina Bebas resigned as head coach at Framingham State ... Nevada hired Terri Patraw as head coach. Patraw, who formerly was head coach at Arizona State from 1996-00, replaces Dang Pibulvech.
Women's soccer assistant -- Stony Brook named Doug Shank as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's tennis -- Indiana State appointed Malik Tabet as head women's coach ... Darlene Dillard accepted responsibilities as head women's coach at Brooklyn.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Matt Peck was selected as head women's coach at Middle Tennessee ... St. Mary's (Maryland) hired Morris Davis as head coach to replace Kelly Sampson ... UNLV named Allison Keeley as head coach ... Farmingdale State chose John Sack as head women's coach. Sack has been coaching at the high-school level for the past four years and succeeds Irma Munoz.
Staff
Academic services -- Diana Cardenas was appointed as an academic counselor at Texas-Pan American. Cardenas, who has been women's residence hall director at the school, succeeds Kim Cochrane.
Athletic trainer -- Bryan Lind was named as interim assistant athletic trainer at Washington (Missouri).
Development -- Providence selected Charles McPhee as director of development for athletics.
Recreation assistant -- Rutgers-Camden tabbed Keith Williams as assistant director of recreational services.
Strength and conditioning -- Marcus Kinney was chosen as director of skill development at West Virginia. For the past three years, Kinney has been a strength and conditioning coach at Kansas State.
Strength and conditioning assistant -- West Virginia selected Jason Pompili as an assistant strength and conditioning coach to replace John McCallister. Since 2001, Pompili has worked as an intern and a graduate assistant at the school.
Ticket operations -- Trish Seebohm accepted duties as director of special events and ticket operations at Drake.
Associations
Christopher E. Knight was named as president of the Orange Bowl Committee for 2004-05. Knight succeeds Dean Colson. The committee also announced Peter T. Pruitt, Jr. was chosen as president-elect to become president in 2005-06.
National office
Janet Weyer was named as a programmer/analyst at the national office. Weyer has been a systems analyst at State Farm Insurance ... Terri Steeb was promoted to associate director of membership services/Division II governance at the national office ... Vanessa Fuchs was promoted to membership services coordinator. Fuchs most recently has been a membership services intern at the national office.
Former Georgia football student-athlete Royce Smith died January 22. He was 54. Smith was a 1971 all-America selection and two-time all-Southeastern Conference selection at the school before being drafted in the first round by the NFL's New Orleans Saints in 1972.
Former Indiana (Pennsylvania) women's volleyball coach Nancy Ruth Barthelemy died December 29. She was 76.
Jerome Supple, former president at Texas State, died January 16. Supple was 67.
Elroy Hirsch, former football player and athletics administrator at Wisconsin, died January 28. He was 80. Hirsch played football at Wisconsin for one season before transferring to Michigan, where he became the school's only student-athelete to earn letters in four major sports (football, basketball, baseball and track) in the same year. Hirsch went on to complete nine years in the NFL and was a 1968 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He also served as director of athletics at Wisconsin from 1969 until his retirement in 1987.
Russell "Sox" Walseth, former head basketball coach at Colorado, died of cancer January 28 at the age of 77. Walseth led the school's men's team to a 261-245 mark and three Big Eight Conference championships to become the winningest men's basketball coach at the school. Walseth also formerly served as head women's basketball coach for the Buffaloes from 1980-83. In addition, he worked as an athletics administrator at the school.
Former Denver men's ice hockey student-athlete Keith Magnuson died in an automobile accident December 15. He was 56. Magnuson was a member of Denver's 1968 and 1969 national championship teams and went on to complete 11 seasons in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Saint Leo women's basketball student-athlete Elaine Evans died February 1. She was 19. Evans, a sports management major, started 13 games at center and had competed in all 19 contests this season.
