California named Anne "Sandy" Barbour as director of athletics. Barbour succeeds Steve Gladstone, who resigned after three years to return to coaching the school's rowing teams on a full-time basis.
Barbour has been part of the athletics administration at Notre Dame since 2000 and has served as deputy director of athletics since July 2003. The former chair of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee and former member of the Division I Academics, Eligibility and Compliance Cabinet came to the Irish from Tulane. She served as an associate athletics director for the Green Wave before becoming director of athletics in 1996. Barbour also has worked as an assistant athletics director at Northwestern and formerly was a field hockey and lacrosse assistant at Massachusetts.
Barbour is a cum laude 1981 graduate of Wake Forest with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She was a four-year letter-winner and captain of the Demon Deacons field hockey squad and played two varsity seasons on the women's basketball team. Barbour also earned a master's degree in sports management at Massachusetts in 1983 and an MBA at Northwestern in 1991.

J. Keith Motley was appointed as interim chancellor at Massachusetts-Boston to replace Jo Ann M. Gora. Motley is vice-chancellor for student affairs ... Arcadia named Jerry Greiner as president. Greiner, who succeeds the retired Bette Landman, was provost at Hamline.
Directors of athletics
Cincinnati announced Athletics Director Bob Goin will continue with the school until June 30, 2006 ... John Ratliff was named as athletics director at Keene State. Ratliff had served in the same capacity at the school for the past nine years before taking the athletics director's post at Oglethorpe in August ... Charlie Titus, athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Massachusetts-Boston, was selected as interim vice-chancellor of student affairs. Pat Burns, associate athletics director, was named as interim director of athletics ... William J. Weider resigned after six years as athletics director at Texas-Pan American to accept the same position at Weber State. Jim Lancaster assistant athletics director for sports medicine, was named as interim athletics director.
Associate director of athletics
Texas-San Antonio elevated Ross Cobb to associate athletics director for business services. Cobb has been with the school since February 2003 and has most recently worked as assistant athletics director for business services.
Coaches
Baseball Cal State L.A. chose Dave Taylor as head coach. Taylor has spent the past eight seasons as the top assistant coach and pitching coach at Cal State Chico, where he has helped coach the Wildcats to NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999 ... Jeff Caulfield was selected as head coach at Manhattanville.
Baseball assistants Florida Gulf Coast added Rusty McKee and John Vigue as assistants ... Eric Alvarez was announced as an assistant coach and assistant recruiting coordinator at New Jersey City. Alvarez was a volunteer assistant with the program during the 2004 season ... Duquesne chose Todd Schiffhauer as an assistant.
Men's basketball Massachusetts-Boston named Rodney Hughes as interim head men's basketball coach. Hughes, who has been an assistant with the program for 24 seasons and an assistant athletics director for the past eight years, takes over for Charlie Titus, who was named as interim vice-chancellor of student affairs ... Rutgers awarded head coach Gary Waters with a two-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season. In three years at the helm, Waters has led the program to a 50-42 mark and two appearances in the Women's NIT.
Men's basketball assistants Brad Greenberg was elevated to associate head coach at Virginia Tech ... Hartford chose Al Seibert as an associate head coach ... Leo Miller assumed duties as a volunteer assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast ... Pat Campolieta was tabbed as an assistant coach at Le Moyne. Campolieta spent two seasons playing professionally in Northern Ireland ... Michigan State elevated Doug Wojcik to associate coach ... Patrick Sellers accepted responsibilities as director of men's basketball operations at Connecticut ... La Salle appointed Ashley Howard as an assistant coach ... Women's basketball Minnesota awarded head coach Pam Borton a three-year contract extension through 2011. Borton has compiled a 50-15 record and guided the Gophers to one Final Four appearance since taking over the program in 2002 ... Cindy Stein, head coach at Missouri, was awarded a two-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Stein has guided the Tigers to a 101-79 record and five straight postseason appearances in six seasons as head coach.
Women's basketball assistants Michele Koclanes accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Pennsylvania ... Florida Gulf Coast appointed Sharon Wilkerson Emory as an assistant ... Tony Ciccone was selected as an assistant coach at Emory. Ciccone has spent the past year as an assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology ... Amanda Went was added as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin ... Cleveland State hired Oties Epps as an assistant coach. For the past three seasons, Epps has worked as an assistant men's basketball coach at Wisconsin-Stout ... Jen Duhnke was named as a graduate assistant coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania).
Men's and women's cross country assistant Texas-Pan American chose Peter Hess as an assistant track and field and cross country assistant coach. Hess has fulfilled similar duties at Central Florida during the past year ... Amy Rudolph, a two-time U.S. Olympian and two-time U.S. indoor champion in the 3,000 meters, was hired as an assistant coach at Bryant.
Equestrian Lynchburg named Nick Caputo as head coach.
Football John Robinson, head coach at UNLV, announced plans to retire at the end of the season. Robinson has been in charge of the Rebels program for six seasons and formerly was head coach at Southern California and for the NFL's Los Angeles Rams.
Football assistant Wisconsin-River Falls hired Jamie Herrick as defensive line coach and athletics strength and conditioning coach. Herrick was an assistant track and field coach at St. Mary's (Minnesota) during the 2003-04 school year.
Men's and women's golf assistant Casey Lubahn accepted duties as an assistant men's coach at Michigan State. Lubahn is a May 2004 graduate of the school, where he was a three-year letter-winner with the men's golf squad.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistants St. John's (New York) selected Dan Chemotti as an assistant coach ... Siena chose Andrea Duffy as an assistant women's coach. Duffy most recently has coached at Oneonta State.
Softball assistants Tamara Boggs was hired as an assistant coach at Emory. During the 2004 season, Boggs served as a volunteer assistant with the program ... Jen Goodwin was named as an assistant coach at San Jose State. Goodwin, who replaces Kim Schuette, was interim head coach at Dartmouth during the 2004 season.
Men's and women's swimming and diving Jason Morini was hired as aquatics director and head men's and women's coach at Misericordia. Most recently, Morini has worked as head coach at Canisius.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants Emory selected Derek Perkins as an assistant coach. Perkins has worked as an assistant at Transylvania for two years and also was head coach at Lexington (Kentucky) High School during the 2003-04 school year ... Syracuse chose Jess Withey as an assistant swimming coach ... Mary Ellen Clark, a two-time Olympic medalist, was named as head diving coach at Mount Holyoke. Clark replaces Tim Church.
Men's and women's track and field Wisconsin-River Falls chose Martha Brennan as head men's and women's coach. Since 1997, Brennan has worked as an assistant track and field coach at Texas A&M.
Men's and women's volleyball Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Marty Petersen retired as head women's coach. The school chose Brian Schaefer as interim head coach ... Kerri Holz was hired as head women's coach at Marian (Wisconsin) to replace Doug Hammonds, who will continue as director of athletics at the school. For the past two years, Holz has been a graduate assistant women's coach at Minnesota State Mankato.
Men's and women's volleyball assistants Ryan Woodcock was appointed as an assistant coach at Quinnipiac ... Emory added Whitney Jones and Megan Williams as assistants.
Wrestling Neil Barnes accepted responsibilities as head coach at Millersville.

Assistant athletic trainers Crystal Lanning was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Wisconsin-River Falls. Most recently, Lanning has been a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Centre ... Justin Zabrosky was added as an athletic trainer at Texas-Pan American. Zabrosky most recently has worked as head student athletic trainer at Vermont.
Equipment managers Charles Mackey was announced as athletics equipment supervisor at Vermont. Most recently, Mackey was assistant director of varsity sport services at Union (New York) ... Arthur J. Wright, athletics equipment manager at Delaware State since 1961, retired in July.
Marketing/promotions Vermont tabbed Michael Cairns as athletics event management coordinator. Cairns most recently worked at ESPN as a production assistant ... Michael Harman was chosen as marketing coordinator at Texas-San Antonio. Since 2002, Harman has worked as manager of advertising at the University of Kansas Athletic Corporation.
Sports information Tom Byrnes was hired as sports information director at California (Pennsylvania). Byrnes, who replaces the retired Dave Smith, has spent the past four years as assistant executive director for media relations at the Patriot League ... North Dakota State named Jeff Schwartz as director of athletics media relations. Schwartz has been women's sports information director at the school for the past 14 years ... Damion Jones resigned after six years as sports information director at Hunter.
Sports information assistants Vermont selected Bruce Bosley and Ben Dickie as full-time assistants in the athletics communications office. Bosley has been with the school since December 1997 and Dickie has been an assistant sports information director at Quinnipiac since August 2003.
Strength and conditioning assistant Justin Smith was appointed as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Vermont. Smith has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Miami (Ohio).

The Big 12 Conference named Rob Carolla as director of communications ... Hockey East named William Riley, Jr. as special assistant to the supervisor of officials ... Rachelle Held and Brianne Ballard were appointed as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference fellows for the 2004-05 academic year.
Associations
The American Volleyball Coaches Association hired Kelly Stumph as coordinator of awards. Stumph has most recently served as technical coordinator intern for the U.S. Women's Volleyball National Team.

Corrections
A chart in the September 13 NCAA News listing the dollars Division I conferences spent from their 2003-04 Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund allocations incorrectly reported figures from two leagues. The Mid-Continent Conference actually spent $102,932.71 and the Western Athletic Conference spent $587,671.
Reprimands
The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee has reprimanded C. Vivian Stringer, head women's basketball coach at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, for inappropriate comments made during the first round of the 2004 Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Stringer made negative comments about officiating after Rutgers' first-round game against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee has reprimanded University of Kansas student-athlete Keith Langford for inappropriate comments made during the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Langford made negative comments about officiating after the Kansas-Georgia Tech game in the St. Louis regional finals. The comments violated the NCAA policy that states: "Members of the coaching staff or other representatives of participating institutions or conferences shall not make public statements critical of officiating in any NCAA championship event. Failure to comply with this policy may subject the individual, institution or conference to the misconduct provisions of NCAA Bylaw 31.1.10." Per the parameters of the bylaw, the committee issued a public reprimand to Langford for his comments.
School name changes
Georgian Court College officially changed its name to Georgian Court University, effective immediately ... Lewis and Clark College has officially changed its name to Lewis & Clark College.
Pete Cutino, former head men's water polo coach at California, died September 19. He was 71. Cutino guided the Bears to a 519-172-10 record and eight national championships in a 26-year tenure. The four-time NCAA and Pacific-10 Conference coach of the year also served as head coach of the U.S. National Team from 1972 to 1978 and the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team.
Bernardo Romero, a swimming and cross country student-athlete at Alabama, died of leukemia September 15. He was 21. Romero was a member of Ecuador's national swimming team and also was a nationally ranked triathlete.
Stacy Webb, a freshman member of the Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team, was killed in an automobile accident September 20.
Former Southern California men's basketball student-athlete Lee Guttero died of kidney failure August 29. He was 92. Guttero, who helped the Trojans earn three straight conference championships, was the first Southern California player selected to two all-America teams and led the team in scoring from 1933 to 1935.
