Sports sponsorship: Roger Williams University plans to elevate its men's and women's swimming and diving programs to varsity status beginning in 2005-06, but the school also announced it no longer will sponsor varsity programs in men's volleyball and coed golf. "The completion of the new Campus Recreation Center and eight-lane, 25-meter pool has led to a remarkable increase in student interest in aquatic sports at the university," said George Kolb, director of athletics, intramurals and recreation. "With tremendous participation in swimming as a club sport this past year and a strong interest from prospective student-athletes, a full-time coach already on staff, and this beautiful facility, the decision to elevate the status of our swimming and diving programs soon was an easy one." The swimming and diving teams will continue to be coached by university aquatics coordinator Julie O'Brien. The golf program will be disbanded effective fall 2004, but the men's volleyball team will continue to compete as a club team.
Facilities: Augsburg College is receiving a $1 million gift from Alan Rice, a two-time Big Ten Conference wrestling titlist at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, to help fund the $5 million expansion of Si Melby Hall and to support the creation of a Greco-Roman wrestling training center as part of the project. Rice, a National Wrestling Hall of Fame member who competed in the 1956 Olympic Games and coached the U.S. Greco-Roman team at the 1972 Olympics, is making the donation in memory of his wife Gloria, who died in September 2001. "This is a wonderful way for Alan to honor wrestling and his wife's memory," said William V. Frame, Augsburg president. "Gloria shared Alan's life-long appreciation for wrestling, and this philanthropic investment will generate significant benefits." The gift is the largest Augsburg has received for an athletics project, and is expected to attract world-class Greco-Roman wrestlers to train in the new facility. Augsburg currently has a successful varsity wrestling program that has claimed eight Division III Wrestling Championships team titles in the past 14 years. The expansion project also will add classrooms, expand locker-room facilities for varsity teams, and add a cardiovascular fitness area, aerobics/multipurpose studio and a general student locker room to an expanded fitness center. Improvements of meeting facilities, laboratories, faculty/staff locker rooms also are planned, along with creation of a new hospitality area.
