Sports sponsorship: Pacific University (Oregon) has decided it will reinstate men's swimming effective with the 2004-05 season, in addition to a women's program that was re-established in 2003 after a 15-year absence. Pacific Athletics Director Judy Sherman, who said the women's team was added as part of the institution's Title IX plan, described the renewal of the men's program that was discontinued along with women's swimming in 1988 as a natural progression. "There are few swim programs out there that field either men or women, but not the other," she said. "Wherever you go, swim programs operate as a team with both men and women, supporting and cheering for each other. Adding the men's team at Pacific fills that void and gives us another competitive avenue with our sister institutions." The teams will be coached by Nathan Templeman, who recently was named Pacific's director of swimming.
