Dates and sites: Regionals will be May 20-23 at eight on-campus or neutral sites. The finals will be May 28-June 1 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin. Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Lawrence will host.
Field: Forty-two teams, including champions of 32 conferences that have received automatic qualification.
Selection date: May 16.
2003 champion: Chapman.
Top contenders: Johns Hopkins, Emory, Eastern Connecticut State, Trinity (Texas).
Championship notes: Johns Hopkins is seeking its first appearance in the finals since its third-place showing in 1989. Four different Blue Jays have earned Centennial Conference player-of-the-week honors in clinching the league's regular-season title. The team won its first 33 games before losing late in the season to Montclair State, but recovered to sweep through the Centennial Conference tournament and qualify for NCAA play ... Emory junior outfielder Josh Barrett leads Division III in stolen bases (48 through April 25). Pitcher Will Carr extended his season record to 12-0 as Emory collected its school-record 40th win April 25 ... Senior right-fielder Dwight Wildman's 31-game hitting streak tied a record at Eastern Connecticut State and helped rank Wildman among Division III leaders in runs batted in per game ... Trinity (Texas) won three games in the elimination bracket to win the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tourney April 25 and earn an automatic berth in the Division III championship.
Date and sites: First-round games (May 12), second-round games (May 16), quarterfinal games (May 19) and the semifinals (May 23) all will be played at campus sites. The final will be May 30 in Baltimore.
Field: The Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship provides for a maximum field of 17 teams.
Selection date: May 9.
2003 champion: Salisbury.
Top contenders: The April 26 USILA poll ranked Salisbury, Washington (Maryland), Cortland State, Middlebury, Gettysburg and Nazareth as the top teams.
Championship notes: Salisbury and Washington (Maryland) were both undefeated in the most recent poll, with Salisbury's record standing at 15-0 and Washington's record at 14-0. Salisbury is a three-time champion, having won in 1994, 1995 and 1999 ... Hobart won this event from its inception in 1980 until 1991, and again in 1993. Hobart is now in Division I for men's lacrosse and is ranked 19th in the most recent USILA Division I poll ... Besides Hobart and Salisbury, the only other schools to win this championship are Nazareth, Washington (Maryland) and Middlebury.
