It's official now: Another streak is under way in the Division II Women's Cross Country Championships.
A year after snapping cross-state rival Western State's three-year string of victories, Adams State posted its own second straight win, and again did so in dominating fashion, winning by 70 points over Edinboro. The Grizzlies placed four runners among the top 12 individual finishers -- and among the top seven team scorers -- and their fifth runner placed 19th during the November 20 championships at Southern Indiana.
Adams State is no stranger to streaks, having won eight titles in a row from 1992 until Western State ended that run in 2000. This year's victory ties the Division II women's record for overall team titles at 10 -- a fact that recalls another great streak in the championships. Former Division II member Cal Poly won 10 straight women's cross country titles beginning in 1982 -- a streak that also was broken by Adams State.
Coach Damon Martin, who has been present for all 10 of the Grizzlies' victories, saw his team dominate this year's race by an even wider margin than last year, when Adams State won by 63 points.
"The gals really took it to them," Martin said. "I'm really proud of all their efforts. They competed hard and represented Adams State well."
Victoria Martinez and Stephanie Bylander led the Grizzlies, finishing fifth and seventh individually. They were joined in the top 12 by two other returnees from last year's championship team, Emily Mortensen and Virginia Coindreau. Michelle Icban rounded out the scoring, placing 19th overall.
Martinez, Bylander and Coindreau each qualified for their seventh all-America awards in cross country and track, while Mortensen collected her sixth award. A sixth member of the team, freshman Tanya Gaurmer, just missed collecting the honor, placing 28th among American-born entrants in the race and 32nd overall.
Runner-up Edinboro posted its best finish in 14 tries, led by Julie Nemergut, who improved dramatically on her 109th-place finish at last year's championships to place 10th overall in Evansville.
Western State finished a distant third, despite Alisha Williams' third-place finish, the best among scoring runners at the championships. Grand Valley State finished fourth and Kennesaw State placed fifth.
In individual competition, Brigham Young-Hawaii's Chelsea Smith became the championships' fifth two-time titlist with her second straight victory. She finished the 6-kilometer race with a time of 21 minutes, 33 seconds -- three seconds ahead of Clayton State's Allison Kruetzer.
Smith battled Adams State's Bylander for the lead through much of the race on a muddy course, before Bylander faded about 11/ 2 miles into the course. Smith built a comfortable lead and never really was threatened from that point, although Kruetzer closed the gap down the stretch.
Smith is a junior, but will graduate a year early and thus will not return next year to take a shot at becoming the first three-time winner in Division II women's cross country. She ended her intercollegiate cross country career undefeated.
She credited the win to mental preparation, as well as a determination to gain the lead and keep it -- or what she called a "no-one-is-allowed-to-pass" mentality.
"I knew it would be tough and that there would be a lot of pressure on me to repeat so I did everything I could to prepare myself mentally, and that carried me through the race," she said.
In contrast to the men's race, only five of the top 10 individual women finishers ran for competing teams. Seattle Pacific's Karen Dickson finished fourth in the race, and last year's runner-up, sophomore Mindy Sawtelle of Indiana (Pensylvania), finished eighth.
