Facilities: The soccer field for New Jersey Institute of Technology has been resurfaced with SprinTurf, an artificial surface. SprinTurf is the only artificial grass on the market that does not use sand in its infill. A university spokesperson said the rubber infill feels and reacts more like natural grass and allows the surface to last longer. "We desperately needed a new soccer facility," said Athletics Director Lenny Kaplan. "The old natural grass surface gave us limited use and was unable to take the wear and tear of practices and an increasing intramural and club sport program. The new artificial grass facility can be in use 24 hours a day and seven days a week and still be in top shape."
Sports sponsorship: Men's lacrosse and women's swimming will become the 14th and 15th sports programs at Saint Leo University, effective for the 2005-06 school year ... Minnesota State University Mankato has added bowling as a women's varsity sport. With the addition, Minnesota State-Mankato will offer 12 women's varsity sports. "With the existence of an on-campus facility and already active club programs, we felt this was a natural progression and a very cost-effective way to build on the current level of interest," said Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman. Buisman also announced that club bowling coach George Cejka will lead the program. He has guided the Maverick club bowling program since 1999 ... Millersville University of Pennsylvania is renovating Biemesderfer Stadium in the first major overhaul since 1970 when the main grandstand and locker room facilities were erected. Renovations began after the completion of the football season. The first phase will include the installation of new synthetic turf, a new all-weather eight-lane track (with new jumping and vaulting areas), a new press box and refurbished home locker room and athletic training facilities. Phase I will be complete for the 2005 season. Plans for the second phase are being completed now. It will include permanent seating on the north side and possibly refurbished visitors locker room facilities. Millersville also has plans for a new baseball facility. All of the work is to be completed by 2007.
