Martin, Engelmann elected to chair governance groups

Kathryn A. Martin, chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth, has been elected chair of the Division II Presidents Council while Paul H. Engelmann, faculty athletics representative at Central Missouri State University, has been chosen to lead the Division II Management Council.

Martin and Engelmann will assume their new roles at the end of the 2005 NCAA Convention in Dallas.

Martin will replace George Hagerty, president of Franklin Pierce College, while Engelmann will take the place of Sue Willey, director of athletics at the University of Indianapolis.

Martin

Martin became chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth in August 1995 after five years at the University of Illinois, Champaign, where she served as dean of the college of fine and applied arts and co-director of the National Arts Education Research Center.

Martin also served as the founding dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University (Michigan) from 1986 to 1990 and as dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Department of Drama/Dance at the University of Montana from 1979 to 1986.

She is past chair of the National Coalition of Education in the Arts, a coalition of 27 arts organizations with interest in arts in education. She previously chaired the Indiana Arts Commission (1972-79) and has served as president of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans and as chair of the Arts in Education Committee of that organization.

Martin joined the Division II Presidents Council in 2003. She has served as liaison to the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

She holds an B.A. from Saint Mary of the Woods College, an M.A. from Indiana State University and an Ed.D. from the University of San Francisco.

Engelmann

Engelmann, a professor of economics and chair of the department of economics and finance at Central Missouri State, has served as his institution's faculty athletics representative since 1981. He joined the Division II Management Council in 2002.

He was the longtime chair of the the Division II Legislation Committee, serving on that group from 1999 until this past summer. He also chaired the Division II Legislative
Review Subcommittee from 1997 to 1999.

Engelmann was parliamentarian for the Division II Convention business sessions from 1993 to 1998 and served as parliamentarian for the general business session in 1997.

He has been active in the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association, serving on its executive committee from 1994 to 1996 and on its legislative review committee from 1990 to 1993.

Engelmann also served as president of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association from 1995 to 1997 and vice-president from 1993 to 1995.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Drury University in business administration and economics. He also holds a Ph.D. in economics from Oklahoma State University.
