The future of women's volleyball and potential changes to the administration of the championship were among issues discussed by the Division I Women's Volleyball Committee at its meeting February 2-5 in Savannah, Georgia.

In addition to selecting sites for regional competition for the 2004 championship (see the February 16 issue of The NCAA News), the committee discussed a growing concern about championship attendance because the semifinals and finals are held a week before the December holiday season. A change in date formula will be explored.

In regard to the administration of the championship, the committee decided that during pre-match introductions, 15 players and the head coach would be introduced and the libero player would be introduced with the starters. The committee also voted to increase the number of players named to the all-tournament team to seven, and that a multi-colored volleyball would be used for the 2005 championship.

The committee reviewed the selection procedure and voted to remove the secondary criteria "results against teams already receiving at-large bids to the championship." The committee also agreed that for the purpose of selection, matches may not be added to a team's schedule after the first date of competition.

Additionally, the committee voted that in the event that multiple regional hosts are seeded in the same quarter of the bracket, the lower-seeded (higher number) team may be moved one seed in order to separate the hosts.

The committee noted there would be two new members as of September 2004. They are Elizabeth Muir from the University of Notre Dame and Pamela Parks from Eastern Washington University. They will replace committee chair Lisa Love from the University of Southern California and Cindy Spiro from the University of the Pacific (California).
