I-AA athletics directors select academic all-stars in football

The Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association has selected 31 winners of its sixth annual Academic All-Star Football Team.

The winners were chosen from 93 nominees and were announced at the Division I-AA Football Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

"Each year, we are proud of the young men who have earned this award," said John Johnson, chair of the selection committee and athletics director at Weber State University. "They represent the caliber of students and the caliber of athletes found in Division I-AA football."

Football players from all Division I-AA institutions are eligible for the awards. Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.200 (4.000 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.

The Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association also named eight finalists for its third annual $5,000 postgraduate scholarships. In the first two years of the program, one finalist has been selected to receive a scholarship. This year, however, the program has been expanded and two student-athletes will receive postgraduate scholarships during the association's annual membership meeting held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention June 11-14 in Dallas.

The eight finalists are University at Albany linebacker Victor Camacho, Lehigh University wide receiver Dave Crockett, Colgate University tight end John Frieser, Elon College center Brandon Mason, Western Illinois University quarterback Russ Michna, Eastern Washington University wide receiver Kyler Randall, Virginia Military Institute placekicker Matthew Sharpe Western Carolina University offensive lineman Jason Whaley.
