2003 medalist: Mikaela Parmlid, Southern California.
Top team contenders: Duke was the unanimous No. 1 selection in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association poll. UCLA, Auburn, Arizona and New Mexico rounded out the top five. The top 10 included California, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Georgia and Vanderbilt.
Championships notes: Duke edged Georgia in a playoff to win the first Women's Collegiate Match Play Championship at Barefoot Resort in November. UCLA, Arizona, Auburn and Ohio State also played well in that tournament. Duke more recently won its eighth title of the season at the Bryan National Collegiate played at Bryan Park Champions Course. Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State and Auburn completed the top five. Duke's primary contributors are Elizabeth Janangelo, Brittany Lang, Leigh Anne Hardin and senior Virada Nirapathpongporn. Janangelo's win at the Bryan National Collegiate is her fourth overall and second this season. She owns seven top-five finishes in seven tournaments played. "I am playing with a lot of confidence right now," said Janangelo ... Defending team champion Southern California is lurking at No. 11 in the rankings, though the Trojans are without defending medalist Mikaela Parmlid, who was a senior last year. Still, Southern California finished second at the Ping/ASU Invitational held at Karsten Golf Course behind team champion UCLA. New Mexico, Texas and California completed the top five in that event. Sophomore Irene Cho is among contenders for the Trojans.
