Online scoring may be in the future for men's water polo. The NCAA Men's Water Polo Committee discussed virtual reporting at its annual meeting February 10 in Indianapolis and will implement it on a trial basis for the 2004 season.
"The system would start with a sports information director or other designee entering the game results each week," said Al Beaird, chair of the committee and executive director of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. "This would save the committee a lot of angst of tracking down scores for rankings and selection. The institutions could help provide accurate and timely information."
The program has been used by some Division III team sports already, including women's volleyball.
The committee also discussed selection criteria during its meeting and determined that it will remain the same for the 2004 championship to be held at Stanford University in December.
Bids to host the 2006 and 2007 championships are being accepted until November 5. Bid proposals should be sent to Chris Schneider at the national office. The 2005 championship already has been awarded to Bucknell University.
In other action, the committee nominated Ken Weiner, associate athletics director at the University of California, Los Angeles, to replace Beaird as the next committee chair.
