Wendy Walters has been promoted to director of membership services at the NCAA national office. In her new role, Walters will oversee membership educational efforts and coordinate legal activities between the membership services staff and the NCAA general counsel office.
Among her duties will be to oversee regional rules seminars, membership publications and the Compliance Assistant software. She also will continue to serve as a liaison to the Division I Legislative Review Committee. Walters also will continue to oversee each division's infractions appeals committee.
Walters came to the NCAA national office in 1999 as a membership services intern and quickly earned an assistant director position. In that role, she analyzed NCAA legislation and interpretations for member institutions, conferences, private organizations, student-athletes, parents and the general public. She also helped process initial-eligibility waivers for students with a learning disability.
Walters was promoted to associate director in 2001 and became a member of the staff's interpretation leadership team, which is responsible for resolving complex and high-profile interpretative and legislative issues. Walters also began her role as the lead staff liaison to the infractions appeals committees during that time. In addition, she oversaw how a sport becomes an emerging sport for women and was the primary source of legislative and interpretative assistance in the area of emerging sports.
Before joining the NCAA, Walters spent three years as a staff attorney in Geneva, New York.
She has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Rochester, and she earned her juris doctor from the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law in 1995.
