By division, active membership stayed generally the same. The Division I total of 326 institutions is static from last year, though there was some subdivision movement as Division I-AA gained two institutions from I-AAA. The Division II total of 281 is up three institutions from 2002-03, while Division III increased from 420 schools to 421.
Provisional members scheduled to become active members in 2004-05 are Florida Gulf Coast University and Wilmington College (Delaware) in Division II, and Alverno College, Huntingdon College and Transylvania University in Division III.
Spelman College will become an active member in Division III in 2006-07. Provisional members that are eligible for active membership in 2007-08 are Finlandia University, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Mount Mary College, Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley College and the University of Texas at Tyler. All will be classified in Division III.
In 2008-09, California State University, Monterey Bay; Central State University; Claflin University; and Palm Beach Atlantic University will be eligible for active membership in Division II. Provisional members slated to become active Division III institutions that year are Crown College, Keystone College, Mitchell College, Mount Aloysius College, Presentation College and Tri-State University. Utah Valley State College is scheduled to become a Division I member in 2009-10.
Six institutions have entered their exploratory years to determine if they want to pursue membership in Division II. They are Globe Institute of Technology, Langston University, the University of Mary, Newman University, North Georgia College & State University and Notre Dame de Namur University. Seton Hill College is exploring both Division II and Division III.
There are no institutions reclassifying their entire athletics program this year, and only two are reclassifying one sport. They are Augusta State University (women's golf from Division II to Division I) and Ursinus College (field hockey from Division I to Division III). Effective in 2004-05, C.W. Post/Long Island University will reclassify its baseball program from Division I to Division II, Massachusetts Institute of Technology will reclassify its women's rowing program from Division III to Division I and the University of North Dakota will reclassify its women's ice hockey program from Division II to Division I.
In 2005-06, Stillman College and Upper Iowa University are scheduled to complete their reclassifications from Division III to Division II.
