The University of Memphis school colors of royal blue and gray were selected in the early 1900s in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. Pennsylvania State University's colors are blue and white -- but that wasn't always the case. In 1887 a three-member committee was appointed to develop color options from which the student body would select the school's official colors. Dark pink and black were the unanimous choice. However, the pink faded to white after several weeks of exposure to the sun. The students then opted for blue, rather than black, and white. The announcement of the new choice was made in 1890.
