Georgia appoints Felton to basketball post

Dennis Felton has been hired as head men's basketball coach at Georgia. Felton takes over for Jim Harrick Sr., who resigned.

Since March 1998, Felton has served as head coach at Western Kentucky. During his tenure there, the Hilltoppers earned three straight NCAA tournament berths and captured three consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships. Felton, the 2002 conference coach of the year, joined Western Kentucky after serving as an assistant coach and associate head coach at Clemson. He also completed assistant coaching stints at Providence, St. Joseph's, Tulane, Delaware, Charles County (Maryland) Community College and Oxon Hill (Maryland) High School.

Felton was a basketball guard at Prince George's (Maryland) Community College and completed his college career at Howard, where he was a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference all-academic selection. He earned a bachelor's degree in radio/television and film production at Howard in 1985.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Donald J. Ayo announced plans to retire as president at Nicholls State, effective June 30. The school selected Stephen T. Hulbert as Ayo's successor, effective July 1. Hulbert has been chancellor of Montana Western ... Saint Benedict President Mary E. Lyons was appointed president at San Diego, effective July 1 ... Muhlenberg named Peyton R. Helm as president, effective July 1. Helm has been vice-president for college relations and professor of classics at Colby ... Francine G. McNairy was promoted to president at Millersville, effective July 1. McNairy has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs ... Robert L. Caret was named as president at Towson. Caret has been president at San Jose State ... Mary Baldwin appointed Pamela Fox as president. Most recently, Fox has served as dean of the school of fine arts at Miami (Ohio) ... Amherst selected Anthony W. Marx as president, effective July 1. Marx has been professor and director of undergraduate studies of political science at Columbia.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Rita Castagna announced plans to retire as athletics director at Assumption, effective August 31. Castagna, who joined the school 30 years ago as head women's basketball coach, also fulfilled tenures as head women's volleyball coach, head field hockey coach and head women's softball coach. She also was assistant athletics director from 1974-86 ... Kansas released Al Bohl as athletics director. Bohl has been at the school since 2001. Drue Jennings was selected as interim athletics director ... East Tennessee State promoted Dave Mullins to athletics director. Most recently, Mullins has been fulfilling the position on an interim basis ... Ithaca hired Ken Kutler as director of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports to replace Kristen Ford, who was named as director of special campaigns at the school. For the past 17 years, Kutler has worked as athletics director at Hartwick.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Bemidji State hired Kim Falkenhagen as senior woman administrator and head women's volleyball coach. Falkenhagen, who spent the past three years as an assistant coach at West Texas A&M, takes over for Patricia Mickow ... North Dakota's Kathleen McCann retired as senior woman administrator assistant athletics director. McCann joined the school in August 1986 as intramural director, facilities coordinator and coordinator of women's athletics and has been assistant athletics director for facilities and recreation and senior woman administrator since 1991.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Sacramento State named Greg Enloe as associate athletics director for development. Since November 2000, Enloe has been director of annual giving at California.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

John Rock was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports medicine and Arthur Parks was elevated to assistant athletics director for media relations at Providence. Rock, who has been with the school for 15 years, has been coordinator of sports medicine since 2001. Parks joined the school in 1995 as an assistant sports information director and has been director of media relations since 2000 ... Jenny Bramer was chosen as assistant athletics director for compliance at San Diego State. For the past six years, Bramer has been at Oklahoma, most recently working as director of compliance.

COACHES

Men's basketball -- Jackson State selected Tevester Anderson as head coach. Anderson, who succeeds Andy Stoglin, was head coach at Murray State for five seasons ... Bernie Matthews will not return as head coach at St. Vincent next season. The school appointed Don Harris as Matthews' successor as head coach ... Dayton chose Brian Gregory as head coach to replace Oliver Purnell. Gregory has served as associate head coach at Michigan State for the past four seasons ... Scott Stemple resigned as head coach at Wilmington (Ohio)... Gregg Marshall, head coach at Winthrop, signed a contract extension through 2009. Marshall, who was recognized as Big South Conference coach of the year this season, has led the program for five seasons ... Quincy hired Marty Bell as head coach. Bell has been associate head coach at Drake since 1999 ... Southwestern Oklahoma selected Scott Reed as head coach to take over for George Hauser, who resigned after 27 years as head coach. Since 1997, Reed has worked as an assistant at Northeastern State ... Jerry Steele, head basketball coach at High Point for the past 31 years, announced his retirement, but will continue with the school as a consultant. Steele has been at High Point since 1972 and was athletics director from 1972 to 1998 ... Seth Greenberg was named as head coach at Virginia Tech. Greenberg, who has been head coach at South Florida for seven years, succeeds Ricky Stokes ... Wright State chose Paul Biancardi as head coach. Biancardi, who was an assistant coach at Ohio State, replaces Ed Schilling ... Alcorn State promoted assistant Samuel West to head coach to replace Davey Whitney ... Oliver Purnell was hired as head coach at Clemson. Purnell, who succeeds Larry Shyatt, has been head coach at Dayton since 1994 ... Murray State announced Mick Cronin as head coach to take over for Tevester Anderson. Since April 2001, Cronin has worked as top assistant at Louisville ... Porter Moser was hired as head coach at Illinois State. Moser, who has been head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock, replaces Tom Richardson ... Arkansas-Little Rock promoted Steven Shields, an assistant coach for the past three years, to head coach to replace Porter Moser ... South Carolina State selected Ben Betts as head coach to succeed Cy Alexander. Last season, Betts was an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth ... Kurt Kanaskie resigned after seven seasons as head coach at Drake ... William and Mary's Rick Boyages resigned as head coach. Boyages, who has guided the program for three years, will become associate head coach at Ohio State, a position he formerly held for three years ... Todd Lickliter was awarded a contract extension through the 2009-10 season as head coach at Butler. Lickliter took over the program in May 2001 and has captured two straight Horizon League regular-season championships ... Jamie Dixon, associate head coach at Pittsburgh, was elevated to head coach to replace Ben Howland ... Western Kentucky hired Darrin Horn as head coach. Horn, who succeeds Dennis Felton, has been an assistant at Marquette for four seasons ... Roy Williams was named as head coach at North Carolina, replacing Matt Doherty. Williams has served as head coach at Kansas for the past 15 seasons ... Cleveland State awarded head coaching duties to Mike Garland, an assistant at Michigan State for the past seven years. Garland replaces Rollie Massimino ... Paul Combs was named as head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. Combs has been head coach at Lakeland for four years ... South Florida awarded head coaching responsibilities to Robert McCullum. McCullum, who has been head coach at Western Michigan for three years, takes over for Seth Greenberg ... Kentucky's Tubby Smith signed an eight-year contract extension as head coach ... Malcolm Wynn was chosen as head coach at Curry ... Columbia hired Joseph Jones as head coach to replace Armond Hill. Jones has spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova ... Kansas appointed Bill Self as head coach to succeed Roy Williams. In three seasons as head coach at Illinois, Self led teams to a share of the 2001 and 2002 regular-season Big Ten Conference championships.

Men's basketball assistants -- Tom Asbury was tabbed as an assistant coach at Alabama ... Washington State hired Mike Heideman as an assistant coach. Heideman was an assistant coach at Valparaiso last season ... UTEP added Sergio Rouco as an assistant coach. For the last three seasons, Rouco was served as an assistant coach at Florida International ... Ernie Ziegler was appointed as an assistant coach at UCLA. For the past two years, Ziegler has worked as an assistant at Pittsburgh ... Dayton added Billy Schmidt and Morgan Cassara as assistants ... Washington State hired Mike Burns as an assistant and Ron Sanchez as director of basketball operations. Burns was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Washington and Sanchez has spent the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Indiana ... Michael Broughton resigned after three seasons as an assistant at Nebraska to become head coach at Southern Nazarene University ... Tod Murphy was added as an assistant coach at UC Irvine. Murphy has been an assistant at UC Riverside ... Eastern Washington tabbed Carl Howell as an assistant coach to succeed Mike Burns. Since the 1992-93 season, Howell has guided the program at Tacoma (Washington) Community College ... Frank Haith was promoted to associate head coach at Texas after most recently serving as an assistant coach ... St. Bonaventure's Kort Wickenheiser resigned as an assistant coach ... Rick Albro was tabbed as an assistant coach at Cleveland State. Albro has served as head coach at Aquinas College for 13 years ... UCLA added Donny Daniels as an assistant and Chris Carlson as director of operations. For the past three seasons, Daniels has worked as head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Carlson has been director of operations at Pittsburgh for the past two years.

Women's basketball -- Dayton appointed Jim Jabir as head coach. Jabir, who takes over for Jaci Clark, has been an assistant at Colorado ... Robin Pingeton was chosen as head coach at Illinois State ... Arkansas hired Susie Gardner as head coach. Gardner, who has been head coach at Austin Peay for seven seasons, replaces Gary Blair ... Kim Bowen Lusk was promoted to head coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Lusk has been interim head coach since the resignation of Sharon Manning Beverly last July ... Jane Albright assumed head coaching responsibilities at Wichita State. Albright, formerly head coach at Wisconsin for nine seasons, succeeds Darryl Smith ... Kevin Borseth, head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay, signed a five-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Borseth, who has led the program for five seasons, was named Horizon League coach of the year this season ... Kurt Budke agreed on a five-year contract as head coach at Louisiana Tech. Budke, who recently completed his first season as head coach, was selected as this season's Western Athletic Conference coach of the year after guiding the team to regular season and conference championships ... New Mexico State hired Darin Spence as head coach to succeed Nikita Lowry and interim head coach Elmer Chavez. Spence has been head coach at Cowley County (Kansas) Community College for six years ... Arkansas-Little Rock named Joe Foley as head coach. Foley, who replaces Tracy Stewart-Lang, has been head coach at Arkansas Tech since 1987 ... Andy Blackston was hired as head coach at Austin Peay to succeed Susie Gardner. Blackston has spent four years at Alabama-Huntsville, two as an assistant men's coach and the last two as head women's coach ... Nevada chose Kim Gervasoni as head coach. For the past three years, Gervasoni has served as the top assistant at Arizona State ... Arkansas Tech appointed Carin Pinion-McNabb as head coach to replace Joe Foley ... Amy Stephens was named as head coach at Drake.

Women's basketball assistants -- John Filar, an assistant coach at Nebraska, will not return next season ... Ball State assistant coach Nicki Collen resigned ... Texas A&M tabbed Kelly Bond as an assistant coach. Bond has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Arkansas ... Becky Padgett resigned after two seasons as an assistant at Austin Peay ... Wichita State hired Erika Lang-Montgomery was an assistant. Lang-Montgomery was the top assistant at Wisconsin for three seasons ... South Carolina appointed Michelle Marciniak as an assistant coach. Marciniak retired after three seasons in the WNBA ... Texas A&M hired Vic Schaefer as associate head coach. Schaefer has been an associate head coach at Arkansas since 1998.

Men's and women's cross country -- Craig Penney resigned after four seasons as head cross country and head women's track coach at Susquehanna to accept a position at Penn State. The school promoted first-year assistant Marty Owens to head men's and women's cross country coach and interim head women's track coach.

Field hockey -- Rutgers selected Elizabeth Tchou as head coach ... Lacey French was chosen as head coach at Union (New York). For the past two years, French has been as an assistant softball coach and assistant field hockey coach at Middlebury.

Football -- Louisiana-Monroe's Mike Collins resigned as head coach. The school appointed Tim Rebowe, secondary coach at the school for two seasons, as interim head coach.

Football assistants -- Carthage appointed Adam Walker as an assistant football coach and assistant track and field coach ... North Carolina State named Noel Mazzone as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach ... Luke Harris assumed responsibilities as offensive line coach at Mansfield. For the past three seasons, Harris has served as an assistant at Mount Ida, fulfilling duties as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator ... Albany (New York) added Jason Martin as defensive line coach, Billy Crocker as running backs coach and Nick LaFontaine as tight ends coach. Martin was defensive line coach at Worcester Polytechnic last season, Crocker was a defensive assistant at Villanova for two seasons and LaFontaine served as running backs coach at Norwich for one season ... San Jose State announced Chris Wilkerson as defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Charlie Roche as offensive coordinator, Edmund Jones as cornerbacks coach, Barry Lunney as quarterbacks coach and Keith Allen as defensive ends coach. Wilkerson, who succeeds Ronnie Lee, has been defensive ends coach since joining the program in 2002. Roche, co-offensive coordinator last season with Norman Joseph, replaces Joseph, who resigned, and will continue as offensive line coach. Jones has been defensive backs coach at Eastern Illinois for two seasons and Lunney has spent three seasons as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Tulsa. Allen was a defensive assistant and special teams coordinator last season and will retain responsibilities as special teams coordinator. San Jose State also promoted Kyle O'Quinn to assistant director of athletics/director of football operations. O'Quinn has been director of football operations since spring 2002 ... Miles Aldridge was added as defensive backfield coach and Rob Best was appointed as quarterbacks coach at Buffalo (New York) ... South Dakota State hired Douglas A. McFadden as secondary coach to succeed Greg Etter. Last season, McFadden served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Langston University ... Chris Pincince assumed duties as offensive coordinator at Ursinus ... Jeffrey Phelps was named as defensive line coach at Hillsdale. Phelps formerly spent three seasons as an assistant at DePauw ... Nick Toth was tabbed as an assistant coach at Ohio.

Men's and women's golf -- Dan Schmotzer resigned as head men's golf coach at Coker, effective June 30. Schmotzer will remain as head men's basketball coach ... Pfeiffer's Dave Davis resigned as head men's golf coach, effective at the end of the 2003 season. Davis will continue as head men's basketball coach ... Wally Goodwin was appointed as director of golf at Northern Colorado. Goodwin retired after serving as head men's golf coach at Stanford from 1987 to 2000, earning national coach of the year honors in 1994 and Pacific-10 Conference coach of the year twice. The school announced Jack Maughan will continue as head women's golf coach and Kyle Hicks will retain responsibilities as assistant men's golf coach.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Patty Stotzheim resigned as head women's coach at Southeast Missouri.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Saint Anselm appointed Dave Flint as head women's coach.

Men's soccer -- Case Western Reserve named Mike Pilger as head coach. Pilger spent one and a half seasons as head coach with Major Indoor Soccer League's Cleveland Force ... Steve Simmons accepted responsibilities as head coach at Northern Illinois.

Men's soccer assistant -- Dartmouth named Greg Vogel as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Brian Davies was selected as head coach at Caldwell to succeed Elizabeth Roper. For the past two years, Davies has been head coach at Green Mountain ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis tabbed Chris Johnson as head coach. Johnson has been head coach at Indianapolis for nine seasons ... Farmingdale State hired Ernesto Phan as head coach. Phan takes over for Danielle Bombara ... Nick Juengert was tabbed as head coach at Richard Stockton to replace Roy Wilkins, who retired. For the past six seasons, Juengert has been assistant men's soccer coach at Rider.

Women's soccer assistants -- Evansville named Stefanie Kraay as an assistant coach. Kraay was a graduate assistant at Mercer last year ... Angela Hind assumed duties as an assistant coach at Dartmouth.

Synchronized swimming -- Mary Kay Adams resigned as head coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts), effective May 31.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Canisius selected Jason Morini as head men's and women's coach, effective July 1. For the past two seasons, Morini has worked as an assistant men's and women's coach at Alfred ... Cal Lutheran selected Tom Dodd as head men's and women's coach. Since 1987, Dodd has worked as head men's and women's coach and aquatics center director at Whitworth.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Edwin Allen was selected as head women's coach at Presbyterian ... Scott Pennewill was named as head women's coach at Johns Hopkins to replace Chris Weidenborner. Pennewill formerly has guided programs at Drexel, Millersville and Clarion ... West Florida tabbed Melissa Wolter as head coach to succeed Nicole Keshock. Wolter was head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside for three years and also had been assistant director of marketing since 2001 ... Gwen Adams resigned after one year as head women's coach at Campbell.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Alma Kovaci was tabbed as an assistant coach at Army.

Men's and women's water polo -- Craig Rond was named as head men's and women's coach at Cal Lutheran. Rond has been director of the South Coast Water Polo Club since 1989 and was swimming and water polo coach at Thousand Oaks (California) High School from 1994 to 2000.

STAFF

Assistant athletic trainer -- Meghan Parks was promoted to associate head athletic trainer at Providence. Parks has been an assistant athletics trainer since 1996.

Marketing/promotions -- Albany (New York) elevated Kevin Frattura to director of corporate sales, marketing and ticket operations. Since 2001, Frattura has served as director of ticket operations and promotions.

Strength and conditioning -- Jackson State appointed Ken Coggins as strength and conditioning coach.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference named Ed Grom as interim commissioner. Grom, who replaces Jon Steinbrecher, has been with the league since 1999, serving as associate commissioner for operations.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Erika Wise was named as a brand licensing manager. Wise has been a consumer marketing associate at Eli Lilly and Company ... Bill Regan was elevated to associate director of membership services. Regan has been an assistant director of membership services.

NOTABLES

Geno Auriemma, head women's basketball coach at Connecticut, was chosen as Associated Press women's coach of the year and Diana Taurasi, a junior at Connecticut, was named as the Associated Press women's basketball player of the year. Auriemma has spent 18 seasons at Connecticut and earned his fourth national championship this season. Kentucky head men's basketball coach Tubby Smith and Xavier senior David West, were selected the Associated Press men's coach of the year and men's basketball player of the year, respectively. Smith has guided the program since the 1998 season ... T.J. Ford, a sophomore at Texas, was named as winner of the John R. Wooden award as college basketball's player of the year. Ford also captured the Naismith award. North Carolina head coach Roy Williams was recognized with the John Wooden Legends of Coaching award ... The V Foundation honored Justin Allen, a junior basketball forward at Arizona State and a cancer survivor, with the Comeback of the Year award. The honor is presented annually to a collegiate basketball student-athlete who demonstrates the spirit and courage of late North Carolina State head basketball coach Jim Valvano.

DEATHS

Bob Allen, a former basketball player at Kansas and son of former Kansas men's basketball coach Phog Allen, died April 3. He was 83. Allen was a three-time letter-winner in the 1940s and twice earned all-Big Six Conference honors.

Former San Francisco football player Louis Stephens died recently. Stephens was a guard on the 1951 undefeated team. He went on to play professionally and also completed a stint as offensive line coach at Notre Dame.

Robert Helmick, former United States Olympic Committee president, died April 15. He was 66. Helmick was president of the USOC from 1985 to 2001 and also completed tenures as president of FINA, the international federation for aquatic sports, as a representative to the International Olympic Committee and as a member of the IOC executive committee.

Former Stanford football player Don Bunce died April 14. He was 54. Bunce, a quarterback, earned most valuable player recognition during a 1972 Rose Bowl victory. He went on to serve as Stanford's football team doctor for 11 years and most recently had been an orthopedic surgeon with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

David Kimani, a track student-athlete at South Alabama and, most recently, Alabama, collapsed and died April 16. He was 25. Kimani, a senior, was a six-time national champion, 14-time all-America selection and a two-time Southeastern Conference cross country athlete of the year. He earned the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meter titles in 2000 and 2001 and the 5,000 meter outdoor title in 2002.
