Tennessee State hires men's basketball coach

Tennessee State has named Cy Alexander as head men's basketball coach. He replaces Nolan Richardson III, who resigned in January.

Alexander has served as head men's basketball coach at South Carolina State for the past 16 seasons. During his tenure, the program captured five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championships. His teams also have made five appearances in the NCAA tournament, including this past season.

Before taking over the program at South Carolina State, the three-time MEAC coach of the year spent 11 years as an assistant at Howard.

Alexander earned a bachelor of arts in sociology at Catawba and a master's degree in education at Howard.

Grunewald was appointed as president at Clarion, succeeding Diane L. Reinhard, who announced retirement plans, effective in June. Grunewald has been provost and academic vice-president at the school ... Ripon named David C. Joyce as president, effective July 1, to replace David Williams, who has been interim president ... Clarence Newsome was hired as president at Shaw. Newsome has been dean of Howard's Divinity School ... J. Michael Ortiz was selected as president at Cal Poly Pomona. Ortiz has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Fresno State ... Brigham Young chose Cecil O. Samuelson Jr. as president, effective May 1. Samuelson formerly was vice-president for health sciences at Utah ... Axel D. Steuer, formerly president at Gustavus Adolphus, was named as president at Illinois College.

Connecticut College named Fran Shields as athletics director ... Robert Williams resigned as director of athletics at Swarthmore. Williams, who has been with the school since 1987, will continue as chair of the physical education department and also will work as faculty athletics representative. The school chose Adam Hertz as Williams' successor. Hertz joined the school in 2001 as an associate athletics director ... Dick Ulrich announced plans to retire as athletics director at Puget Sound, effective June 30. The school named Amy Hackett as Ulrich's successor ... Gene DeFilippo, athletics director at Boston College, signed a contract extension through 2008. DeFilippo, formerly an athletics administrator at Villanova, Kentucky, South Carolina-Spartanburg and Vanderbilt, has been at Boston College since 1997 ... Widener's David Duda assumed additional responsibilities as athletics director. Duda will continue as head men's basketball coach.

Men's basketball -- Rand Chappell resigned after five years as head coach at Henderson State to replace Charles Hervey and interim head coach David James as head coach at Central Arkansas. Henderson State promoted Joe Redmond, top assistant with the program for the past three years, as Chappell's successor ... Tom Billeter was hired as head coach at Augustana (South Dakota). For the past five years, Billeter has been an assistant at Texas A&M ... Cal State Fullerton extended the contract of head coach Donny Daniels through the 2004-05 season. Daniels has been head coach since April 2000 ... Barry Hinson was awarded a two-year contract extension through 2005-06 as head coach at Southwest Missouri State. Hinson has spent the past four years as head coach ... Mercyhurst did not renew the contract of head coach Karl Fogel ... The contract of Longwood head coach Mike Leeder will not be renewed. Leeder has guided the squad since 1999-00 ... Arkansas Tech will not renew the contract of head coach Robert Thompson when it expires June 30. Thompson has guided the program since 1999 ... Jim Harrick resigned after four seasons as head coach at Georgia ... Dick Bennett was hired as head coach at Washington State to succeed Paul Graham. Bennett formerly served as head coach at Wisconsin for five seasons before stepping down early in the 2000-01 season ... Matt Doherty resigned after three seasons as head coach at North Carolina ... Northeastern's Ron Everhart was awarded a two-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Everhart has led the team since April 2001 ... Ohio Valley chose Bill McGee as head coach ... Billy Lee resigned after 18 seasons as head coach at Campbell ... Wisconsin-Milwaukee awarded Bruce Pearl a contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Pearl, who has been head coach for two years, led the program to its first NCAA tournament berth this season ... Penn State appointed Ed DeChellis as head coach. For the past seven years, DeChellis, who replaces Jerry Dunn, has been head coach at East Tennessee State ... Ben Howland, head coach at Pittsburgh for the past four seasons, was named as head coach at UCLA to succeed Steve Lavin ... Georgia State promoted Michael Perry to head coach to succeed the retired Lefty Driesell. Perry spent six years as an assistant with the program before being named interim head coach in January.

Women's basketball -- Wyoming awarded head coach Cindy Fisher a contract extension of through 2007-08. Fisher has been with the school for five seasons ... Sue Guevara resigned after seven years as head coach at Michigan ... Pittsburgh released Traci Waites after five seasons as head coach ... Karen Booker resigned as head coach at Sewanee (University of the South) ... Jaci Clark resigned as head coach at Dayton. Clark was head coach for five seasons ... College of Charleston chose Nancy Wilson as head coach ... Gary Blair was hired as head coach at Texas A&M to replace Peggie Gillom. Blair has been head coach at Arkansas for 10 years ... Wisconsin appointed Lisa Stone as head coach. Stone, who has been head coach at Drake for three seasons, succeeds Jane Albright ... Becker awarded head coaching responsibilities to Heather LeFleur. LeFleur, who takes over for Jody Chaffee, will continue as assistant athletics director ... Lea Henry, head coach at Georgia State, was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season. Henry has been head coach for nine years ... Washington & Lee chose Mandy King as head coach ... John Jay hired Sean Couch as head coach. Couch formerly was an assistant with the school's men's team.

Women's basketball assistants -- Matthew Mitchell was chosen as an assistant coach at Kentucky ... Ron Mott resigned as an assistant at Michigan ... Temple Elmore was added as an assistant coach at College of Charleston ... Renee Ladner assumed duties as an assistant coach at Mississippi ... Texas-Pan American announced Tracy Anderson as associate head coach. Anderson served as interim head coach at the school during the 2002-03 season ... North Dakota State selected Steve Gravalin as an assistant coach. Gravalin, formerly an assistant men's basketball coach at the school from 1985 to 1992, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant girls' varsity coach at Fargo North (North Dakota) High School.

Football assistants -- Adam Waugh was selected as an assistant coach at Army ... Eastern Illinois named Noah Joseph as defensive secondary coach ... Jacksonville tabbed Andy McLeod as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Byron McCall as defensive line coach, Luther Price as offensive assistant coach, Luke Ewalt as quarterbacks coach and Matt Gilliam as receivers coach. McLeod, who succeeds Ed Stults, has been offensive line coach at Gannon for the past four seasons. Last season, Ewalt was wide receivers coach and Gilliam was tight ends coach at the school ... Towson announced Phil Albert as offensive coordinator. Albert formerly spent 20 seasons as head coach at the school before retiring after the 1991 season. He has been offensive coordinator at Calvert Hill College for the 2001 and 2002 seasons ... Temple added Jim Turner as offensive line coach to replace John Reagan. For the past three seasons, Turner has worked as offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at Harvard ... Western Illinois selected Richard Solomon as defensive backs coach. From 1992 to 2001, Solomon completed stints as assistant head coach, defensive backs coach, linebackers coach and director of pro personnel with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings ... Ken Jones, Granville Eastman and Daniel Williams were added as assistants at Austin Peay ... Casey Vogt was named as offensive line coach at Gannon ... Lafayette tabbed Michael Columno as an assistant coach ... John Zernhelt was appointed as offensive coordinator at Citadel ... Nebraska added Carl Pelini as a graduate assistant.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Scott Dockett resigned as head women's coach at Plattsburgh State ... George Roll was hired as head men's coach at Clarkson. Roll formerly was an assistant with the school in the early 1990s and has spent the past seven years as head coach at Oswego State ... Oswego State elevated Ed Gosek to head men's coach to replace George Roll. Gosek has spent the past 13 years as an assistant coach at the school.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Brian Renfrew was added as an assistant men's coach at Michigan State ... Clarkson named Greg Drechsel and Jean-Francois Houle as assistant men's coaches. Drechsel formerly was an assistant with the program in the 1990s, and Houle formerly competed as a member of the school's men's team in the mid 1990s.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- David Johndrow was selected as assistant men's coach at Keene State.

Men's soccer -- Bloomfield selected Ray Brown as head coach ... Stephen Smucker was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Bluffton ... Charles Morrow assumed responsibilities as head coach at Belmont Abbey.

Men's soccer assistant -- James Madison named Patrick McSorley as an assistant men's soccer coach. McSorley, who was a member of three Colonial Athletic Association championship men's soccer teams, has been an assistant coach at VMI for four years.

Women's soccer -- Brian Davies was named as head coach at Caldwell ... Arcardia's Art Goon resigned as head coach. In eight years, Goon captured three straight Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championships from 1998 to 2000 and made two NCAA tournament appearances ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis named Chris Johnson as head coach ... Geoff VanDeusen was selected as head coach at Central Missouri State.

Women's soccer assistant -- James Madison's Carrie Proost resigned as an assistant coach, effective June 30. Proost has been with the program since 1997.

Men's and women's tennis -- Barry Quinn assumed responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at North Greenville ... NYCCT chose Frank Rivera as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Morehead State selected Jaime Gordon as head women's coach. Gordon, replacing Mike Swan, has been top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky for four seasons ... St. Andrews Presbyterian hired Bill Rude as head coach. Rude, who served as an assistant with the program from 1991 to 93, most recently has been an assistant women's coach at Tennessee ... Courtney Dipert was named as head coach at Jacksonville to replace Robin Mignerey, who resigned after three seasons. Dipert served as an assistant at Duke last year ... Washington (Maryland) promoted K.J. Welcenbach to head women's coach. In 2002, Welcenbach was an assistant with the program ... John Blair was hired as head coach at Tennessee Tech to replace Jennie Gilbert, who resigned. Blair served as head coach at Mississippi for 16 seasons before resigning after the 2001 season ... Keystone hired Nicole Goscilo as head women's coach. For the past two years, Goscilo has been head coach at Franklin & Marshall.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Tami Ores and Joe Bonner were added as assistant coaches at Dayton ... Clemson chose Gregg Whitis as an assistant coach ... St. Andrews Presbyterian added Erica Lear as an assistant. Lear is a December 2002 graduate of Tennessee, where she established school records for career assists (5,069), assists in a single season (1,523) and assists in a single match (88) ... Indiana State named Kimberly Monte as an assistant women's coach.

Wrestling -- Craig Thurber assumed responsibilities as head coach at Thiel.

STAFF

Strength and conditioning -- Robert Lindsey resigned as strength and conditioning coach at Illinois State.

CONFERENCES

Jon A. Steinbrecher was named as commissioner at the Ohio Valley Conference, effective May 5. Steinbrecher has been with the Mid-Continent Conference for 14 years, serving as commissioner for the past nine ... The Colonial Athletic Association appointed Melissa Conti as assistant commissioner for championships ... The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference named Adonis Hill as coordinator of baseball officials.

NOTABLES

T.J. Ford, a sophomore guard at Texas, and Diana Taurasi, a junior guard at Connecticut, were chosen as Naismith Award winners as the top college basketball players in the nation this season. Ford leads the team in scoring, assists and steals. Taurasi leads Connecticut in points scored, assists and blocks per game ... Gordy Presnell was named as the 2003 Russell Athletic/Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II national coach of the year. Presnell has served as head coach at Seattle Pacific for 16 seasons ... Kara Lawson, a senior basketball player at Tennessee, was named as the 2003 Frances Pomeroy Naismith award honoree as the nation's top senior women's basketball player 5 feet 8 inches or shorter. This season, Lawson earned recognition as a U.S. Basketball Writers of America first-team all-American and as a Verizon first-team academic all-American ...The Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced Tubby Smith, head men's basketball coach at Kentucky, and Gail Goestenkors, head women's basketball coach at Duke, as the 2003 Naismith coaches of the year. Smith guided Kentucky to the Southeastern Conference championship, and Goestenkors has led Duke to four straight Atlantic Coast Conference titles. The club also honored veteran coach Lefty Driesell with an award for outstanding contributions to basketball. Driesell recently retired as head coach at Georgia State and formerly guided programs at Davidson, Maryland and James Madison.

DEATHS

Mike McLeod, an assistant softball coach at North Dakota State, died March 7 of pancreatic cancer. McLeod was 51.

Chuck Anderson, former head baseball coach at Florida Southern, died from cancer April 3. Anderson, a first baseman and pitcher for the school in the late 1950s, was named as an assistant baseball coach after graduating in 1963, and was promoted to head coach in 1984. During his tenure, Anderson guided the program to three NCAA Division II national championships. He also was recognized as Sunshine State Conference coach of the year eight times and chosen as national coach of the year three times. Anderson retired from coaching in 2002, but continued with the school as associate athletics director for special projects.
