DeMoss to lead women's hoops at Kentucky

Kentucky has hired Mickie DeMoss as head women's basketball coach. DeMoss succeeds Bernadette Mattox, who resigned after eight seasons.

For the past 18 seasons, DeMoss has served as top assistant women's basketball coach at Tennessee. During her tenure there, the program has captured six NCAA national championships and has made 12 Women's Final Four appearances.

Before joining Tennessee, DeMoss was an assistant at Auburn from 1983 to 1985. She went on to assume responsibilities as Florida's first full-time head women's basketball coach in a tenure that stretched from 1979 to 1983. DeMoss also spent two seasons as an assistant at Memphis.

DeMoss, a 1977 graduate of Louisiana Tech, earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education, and competed as a three-year starting point guard for the women's basketball squad. DeMoss also earned a master's degree in education at Memphis.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Phillip D. Creighton was named as president at Pacific (Oregon), effective August 1. Creighton, who succeeds the retiring Faith Gabelnick, has been president at Eastern Oregon since 1998 ... Stephens chose Wendy B. Libby as president, effective July 1. Libby has served as vice-president for business affairs and chief financial officer at Furman ... Hiram President Richard W. Powers announced plans to retire, effective June 30 ... Rider selected Mordechai Rozanski as president, effective August 1. Rozanski has been president at the University of Guelph in Ontario ... Herman J. Saatkamp Jr. was appointed as president at Richard Stockton. Most recently, Saatkamp has been serving as dean of the school of liberal arts and a professor at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... Marilou Eldred announced her retirement as president at Saint Mary's (Indiana) ... Samuel Hulbert announced plans to retire as president at Rose-Hulman, effective in June 2004 ... Chowan President Stanley G. Lott will retire, effective May 31 ... Dale Rogers Marshall resigned as president at Wheaton (Massachusetts), effective June 30, 2004 ... James L. Peterson, president and chief executive officer for the Science Museum of Minnesota, was named as president at Gustavus Adolphus ... Charles Ruch, president at Boise State, was appointed president at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, effective July 1 ... Monmouth President Rebecca Stafford announced plans to retire in June ... Thomas Tredway announced his retirement as president at Augustana (Illinois), effective at the end of the academic year.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

St. Bonaventure appointed Paul Grys as interim athletics director. Grys succeeds Gothard Lane, who was placed on administrative leave and whose contract will not be renewed. Grys was a member of the school's men's basketball 1970 Final Four team and is a retired IBM executive ... Maritime (New York) hired William E. Martinov Jr. as athletics director. Martinov has spent the past five years at St. John's (New York), where he completed tenures as head strength and conditioning coach, director of equipment operations/strength and conditioning, and associate director of alumni relations.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Steve Erber was chosen as associate director of athletics at Cornell, effective April 1. Since 1996, Erber has worked as director of athletics at Muhlenberg ... New Orleans selected Mike Bujol as associate athletics director ... Jonathan Clough was promoted to associate director of athletics at Santa Clara. Clough, who has been with the athletics department since 1999, most recently served as an assistant athletics director.

COACHES

Baseball assistants -- Wheaton (Massachusetts) added Zach Brown, Ryan Parker and Alan Beausoleil as assistant coaches.

Men's basketball -- Curry's Sean Casey resigned as head coach ... Elon head coach Mark Simons resigned... Illinois State will not renew the contract of head coach Tom Richardson, who has guided the program for four seasons ... Clemson's Larry Shyatt resigned as head coach ... Curtis Hunter was released after four seasons as head coach at North Carolina A&T ... Jerry Dunn resigned as head coach at Penn State. Dunn was appointed head coach in 1995 ... UCLA released Steve Lavin as head coach. Lavin led the program to a 145-78 mark in seven years ... Minnesota-Crookston elevated Jeff Oseth to head coach. Oseth, who replaces the retired Gary Senske, spent seven years as an assistant and served as interim head coach during the 2002-03 season ... Rollie Massimino resigned after seven seasons as head coach at Cleveland State. Massimino formerly was head coach at Villanova and UNLV ... Western Illinois head coach Jim Kerwin resigned. In 11 years as head coach, Kerwin guided teams to appearances in three straight Mid-Continent Conference tournament championship games ... Stan Heath, head coach at Arkansas, was awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season ... Ricky Stokes was released after four seasons as head coach at Virginia Tech ... Washington State released Paul Graham as head coach. Graham led the program for four seasons ... Armond Hill was released as head coach at Columbia. Hill had been head coach since 1995 ... Mike Foster was released as head coach at Quincy ... Billy Tubbs, athletics director at Lamar, assumed additional responsibilities as head men's basketball coach to replace Mike Deane, who will be reassigned. Tubbs formerly was head basketball coach at the school from 1976-80 ... Midwestern State awarded additional duties as head men's basketball coach to Jeff Ray, who will continue as athletics director. Ray, who formerly completed tenures as head men's and women's coach at the school, takes over for Greg Giddings ... Phil Mathews agreed to a multiyear contract extension as head coach at San Francisco. Mathews has guided the program for eight years ... Jackson State will not renew the contract of Andy Stoglin. During a 14-year tenure as head coach, Stoglin led the team to three Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA tournament appearances ... Tevester Anderson retired as head coach at Murray State. Anderson has been head coach for five seasons.

Women's basketball -- CCNY appointed Gerald Davis as head coach ... Tom Collen was hired as head coach at Louisville. Collen, who formerly served as head coach at Colorado State from 1997 to 2002, succeeds Martin Clapp ... Texas-Pan American hired DeAnn Craft as head coach to succeed interim head coach Tracy Anderson. Craft, who has been an assistant with the program for the past season, formerly was head coach at Lamar ... College of Charleston will not renew the contract of head coach Melissa Slone ... Robert Morris released Lynn Roman as head coach ... Ed DiGregorio resigned as head coach at Youngstown State ... Barbara Ehardt was released as head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Ehardt led the program for three seasons ... Newberry head coach Tommy Love resigned after two seasons to become director of the annual fund at St. Andrews Presbyterian ... James Madison named Kenny Brooks as head coach ... Jenny Yopp resigned after four years as head coach at Illinois State ... Syracuse head coach Marianna Freeman resigned. Freeman led the team for 10 years ... Mississippi hired Carol Ross as head coach. Ross, who succeeds Ron Aldy, formerly was head coach at Florida for 12 seasons before resiging after the 2001-02 season ... Anne Rexford resigned after four seasons as head coach at Detroit Mercy.

Women's basketball assistants -- Jennifer Grandstaff resigned as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State ... Peggy Gillom was tabbed as an assisant at Mississippi. Gillom had been head coach at Texas A&M for five seasons before being released at the end of this past season.

Men's and women's cross country -- Rich Firth was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Longwood. Firth, who most recently has been director for Communities in Schools of Richmond (Virginia), formerly worked as an assistant track and field coach at Virginia Commonwealth and Farmingdale State ... McMurry promoted David Chandler, an assistant cross country and track coach for the past two seasons, to head men's and women's coach. Chandler replaces Bill Libby, who resigned to become the school's coordinator of leadership and life skills development and who will continue with the school as an assistant professor of religion.

Football -- Bluffton elevated offensive coordinator Greg Brooks to head coach ... Shannon Stassen was promoted to head coach at Minnesota-Crookston after serving in an interim capacity during the 2002 season. Stassen, an assistant with the program for four years, takes over for Scott Oliver, who was chosen as associate director of development at the school.

Football assistants -- Elon chose Shanard Smith as secondary coach. For the last two years, Smith, who replaces Lonnie Galloway, has been secondary coach and strength coach at Randolph-Macon ... Jim Turner was awarded duties as offensive line coach at Temple ... Troy State selected Jeff Fela as offensive line coach ... Bob Trott was named as defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe ... Arizona tabbed Craig Bray as inside linebackers coach and Mike Borich as wide receivers coach. Bray has been defensive coordinator at Oregon State for three years, and Borich was offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Brigham Young for two seasons ... McNeese State's Bob Howell resigned as an assistant ... D.J. Vokolek resigned as defensive coordinator at Nebraska-Omaha to assume similar responsibilities at Northern Iowa ... Bob DeBesse was chosen as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Purdue. Also, Mark Hagen, defensive tackles coach, accepted additional duties as special teams coach ... Franklin & Marshall named Kyle Smesko as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach ... North Dakota State tabbed Dan Enos as offensive coordinator, Patrick Perles as offensive line coach, Jimmy Burrow Jr. as defensive coordinator, Jeffrey McInerney as defensive line coach and Van Malone as wide receivers coach. Enos has been quarterbacks coach at Western Michigan for three seasons; Perles has worked as an assistant coach at Michigan State for three years; and Burrow has spent the past two years as a graduate assistant at Nebraska. McInerney was an assistant at Tulsa for three seasons, and Malone served as an assistant high school coach in Texas this past year. The school also announced Casey Bradley will continue with the program as assistant head coach in charge of linebackers. Bradley has been an assistant at the school for seven seasons and has fulfilled defensive coordinator responsibilities for the past six years ... Bill Kirelawich was named as defensive line coach at West Virginia. Kirelawich was a defensive assistant coach with the school for 22 seasons and has served as the program's administrative assistant for player development for the past two years ... North Carolina Central added Damon Frenchers as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, Robert Massey as wide receivers coach, Trei Oliver as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator, Linwood Ferguson as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, and Andrew O'Daniel as offensive line coach. Frenchers, formerly an assistant at the school for seven seasons, also has been an assistant at Delaware State and Norfolk State. Massey has been a head coach at the high-school level since 2001, and Oliver has worked as defensive secondary coach and assistant special teams coach at Delaware State for four seasons. Last season, Ferguson was offensive coordinator at North Carolina A&T and O'Daniel was a graduate assistant coach at Texas. North Carolina Central also announced that Kienus Boulware will continue with the program as defensive line coach after serving as linebackers coach for the past four seasons ... Eastern Illinois tabbed Derrick Jackson as defensive line coach ... Steve Farmer was chosen as offensive line coach at Eastern Michigan ... Western Michigan hired J.C. Harper as defensive line coach, Tony Kimbrough as tight ends coach and Charley Molnar Jr. as quarterbacks coach. Harper, who replaces Bruce Tall, has been assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Northwestern State. Kimbrough, who has been a volunteer coach with the Arena Football League's Grand Rapids Rampage, succeeds Guy Holliday. Molnar, quarterbacks coach at Eastern Michigan last season, replaces Dan Enos ... Youngstown State appointed Ken Conatser as special teams coordinator and Jerry Olsavsky as linebackers coach ... James Madison selected Amos Jones as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator and Casey Creechan as defensive ends coach. The school also reassigned Curt Newsome as assistant head coach and offensive line coach and Eddie Davis as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and wide receivers coach ... D.J. Durkin and Chad Klunder were selected as graduate assistant coaches at Notre Dame ... Cincinnati named Mike Kolakowski as co-defensive coordinator, Scott Pethtel as special teams and tight ends coach and Ted Gill as defensive line coach. The school also promoted Phil Dorn to assistant head coach and running backs coach and elevated Mark Criner to co-defensive coordinator.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wayne State (Michigan) will not renew the contract of head women's coach Thomas O'Malley ... Mike Sertich announced plans to retire as head men's coach at Michigan Tech, effective June 30. Sertich has been head coach since 2001.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Gavin T. Stinger was chosen as assistant men's lacrosse coach and assistant to the director of intramurals at Moravian. The school also named Andrea Rafferty as an assistant women's lacrosse coach.

Men's soccer -- Dave Barrueta was hired as head coach at Longwood. Barrueta has been an assistant coach at Mercer this season and has served as head men's club coach at Georgia Tech since 2000.

Men's soccer assistant -- Gardner-Webb appointed John Miglarese as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Dartmouth tabbed Ben Landis as head coach ... Pete Cuadrado was hired as head coach to succeed Matt Townsend, who resigned. Cuadrado was an assistant at Illinois State for two seasons ... Albany (New York) hired Kalekeni M. Banda as head coach. Banda most recently was head men's coach at Wisconsin from 1997-01.

Softball assistant -- Erin Kelly was tabbed as an assistant at Moravian.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Wheaton (Massachusetts) chose Betty Ann Giles as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Regis (Massachusetts) hired Kelly Murphy as head coach to take over for Dave Breen. Murphy has been head coach at Ayer (Massachusetts) High School for two seaons.

STAFF

Administrative -- Susan Broussard was named as administrative coordinator at New Orleans. Most recently, Broussard was administrative operations manager at Central Florida.

Athletic trainer -- James Madison's Ron Stafancin announced plans to retire as athletics trainer, effective June 30.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Michael Lopes was named as an assistant athletic trainer at Salve Regina.

Operations -- Northern Iowa selected Heather Tousignant as operations manager/athletics facilities.

CONFERENCES

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named Bill Lide as commissioner. Lide has been athletics director at Central Arkansas.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Phil Grayson resigned as associate director of membership services at the NCAA.

NOTABLES

David West, a senior forward at Xavier, was named as the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year, and Tubby Smith, head coach at Kentucky, was named as the Henry Iba Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. West was the first Atlantic 10 Conference player to capture player of the year honors for three consecutive years. Smith has guided Kentucky to Southeastern Conference regular season and conference tournament championships in 2003 ... Alistair Cragg, a junior at Arkansas, and Muna Lee, a junior at LSU, were chosen as the Mondo national athletes of the year for indoor track and field by the Division I Coaches Association of the United States Track and Field Association. The organization also selected John McDonnell, head men's coach at Arkansas, and Pat Henry, head women's coach at LSU, as the Mondo national indoor track and field coaches of the year. Cragg won the 5,000-meter run, his second straight title, and the 3,000-meter run to help Arkansas clinch the 2003 NCAA indoor team national championship. Lee shattered an NCAA record in the 200-meter dash and captured the 60-meter dash in LSU's successful bid to earn the 2003 NCAA indoor team national championship.

DEATHS

Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball player Lee Denmon III was shot and killed. He was 23. In 54 games, Denmon set school records for three-point shots made in a season and in a career with 69 and 120, respectively.

Former Prairie View A&M track and field coach Hoover J. Wright died March 7 at the age of 74. Wright, who led the school to five Southwestern Athletic Conference championships during his tenure as head coach, also was athletics director and head football coach. He was an assistant coach for the United States teams assembled for the 1975 Pan American Games and the 1972 Olympic Games.

Kathryn Stauffer, a member of the Swarthmore swimming squad, was killed in an automobile accident. Stauffer was 19.

Former Georgia football player Alphonso Ellis died March 21 after a long illness. Ellis, 35, rushed for 599 yards and one touchdown and also served as a primary blocker as a fullback in 42 games at Georgia from 1987-90.

Don Phillips, former coach and athletics administrator at Shepherd, died March 10. He was 85. Phillips served as head football coach from 1948-50 and head men's basketball coach from 1949-51. He also fulfilled responsibilities as athletics director.

Glenn Kendall, former president at Cal State Chico, died March 5. He was 101.
