American has promoted Allison Housman to assistant athletics director for compliance. Housman succeeds David Storm, who resigned to accept a position at Virginia.
For the past four years, Housman has served as an academic coordinator at the school, where her responsibilities have included overseeing the academic development of all student-athletes and directing the Guided Study program. Before joining American, Housman worked as an athletics academic advisor at South Alabama. There, in addition to monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes, Housman was co-director of the Life Skills program and was the athletics administration representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Housman earned a bachelor of arts in international relations in 1994 from Ohio State, where she competed on the school's cross country and track and field teams. She earned a master of arts in international affairs from American in 1997.

Rita Bornstein resigned as president at Rollins, effective in the summer of 2004 ... Howard Payne named Lanny Hall as president. Hall has been chancellor at Hardin-Simmons ... Eastern Mennonite chose Loren E. Swartzendruber as president. Swartzendruber has been president at Hesston College ... Robert Wickenheiser resigned as president at St. Bonaventure. Wickenheiser has been president since 1994. Dominic Monti, a professor of church history at St. Bonaventure, was named as interim president.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
William Paterson chose Sabrina Grant as director of athletics to replace the retired Art Eason. Grant, who has been interim athletics director since last July, has been an associate athletics director at the school since 1994 ... Bluffton named Phill Talavinia as athletics director, effective at the beginning of the 2003-04 academic year to replace Carlin Carpenter, who will retire as athletics director, head football coach and assistant professor, effective September 1. Talavinia has been head athletic trainer at the school for 18 years and associate director of athletics for two years ... Case Western Reserve announced the retirement of David Hutter, athletics director, effective in July 2003. Hutter, who has been athletics director and chairman of the department of physical education and athletics since 1985, will continue with the school as a physical education instructor after a six-month sabbatical ... David Bedard resigned as athletics director at Centenary (Louisiana), effective July 1 ... Charles F. Taylor, director of athletics and recreation at Northwestern, announced plans to retire, effective August 31. Taylor has guided the athletics department since January 1994 ... Frank Carr was elevated to director of athletics at Earlham after serving in an interim capacity since the retirement of Porter Miller in July 2002. Before before assuming duties as athletics director, Carr was head football coach at the school for 17 years ... St. Bonaventure will not renew the contract of athletics director Gothard Lane. Lane's contract expires May 31 ... Eastern Kentucky chose John Shafer as director of athletics. Shafer has been executive director for the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and formerly was athletics director at Mississippi.

Sara Wakefield was chosen as associate athletics director at Bluffton, effective at the beginning of the 2003-04 academic year. Wakefield has served as the school's head volleyball coach and as an health, physical education and recreation instructor for the past four years ... Carolyn Lewis, senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at San Jose State, announced retirement plans, effective September 30.

Craig Shouldice was hired as assistant athletics director for finance and operations at Merchant Marine. From 2001 to 2003, Shouldice was business affairs counsel at Harper Collins Publishers Inc.

Baseball assistants -- Carlos Rosado was added as an assistant coach and Bill Bethea was added as pitching coach at New Jersey City ... Ryan McMains was hired as an assistant coach at Central (Iowa).
Men's basketball -- Mercyhurst will not renew the contract of head coach Karl Fogel ... Jeff Daniels resigned as head coach at Montevallo ... Wright State released Ed Schilling as head coach, but will honor his contract which runs through June 30, 2006. Schilling has led the program for six seasons ... Central (Iowa) head coach Dan Mason resigned after six seasons ... Quincy will not renew the contract of head coach Mike Foster. Foster has been head coach for three years ... Billy McCaffrey was named as interim head coach at St. Bonaventure to take over for Jan van Breda Kolff, who was placed on administrative leave. McCaffrey has been an assistant with the program.
Men's basketball assistant -- Georgia will not renew the contract of assistant coach Jim Harrick Jr. after it expires June 30.
Women's basketball -- Jane Albright resigned as head coach at Wisconsin, effective at the end of the season. Albright has been with the school for nine years ... Cleveland State will not renew the contract of head coach Duffy Burns ... Lauri Ludeman resigned after seven seasons as head coach at Augsburg ... Peggy Keebler resigned as head coach at Montevallo ... Murray State's Eddie Fields resigned as head coach. Fields had led the program for 10 years ... Tracy Stewart-Lange resigned after four seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock ... Martin Clapp resigned as head coach at Louisville. The school appointed Steve Huber, an assistant, as interim head coach ... Kentucky head coach Bernadette Mattox resigned after eight seasons ... Ron Aldy was released as head coach at Mississippi. Aldy had led the program for six seasons.
Field hockey -- Virginia Commonwealth hired Shelly Behrens as head coach. Behrens, formerly head coach at Richmond from 1997 to 2000, has been interim head coach at Virginia Commonwealth during the past season ... Princeton chose Kristen Holmes-Winn as head coach.
Field hockey assistant -- Kerri Jantzen was added as an assistant coach at Hofstra.
Football -- Widener promoted David Wood to head coach to replace Bill Zwaan. Wood, who will continue as head golf coach, has been defensive coordinator since 1997 and formerly was an assistant with the program from 1992 to 1995 ... Craig Bohl was chosen as head coach at North Dakota State. Bohl, who replaces Bob Babich, was an assistant at Nebraska for eight years before being released at the end of last season ... Western Kentucky's Jack Harbaugh resigned after 14 seasons as head coach. Harbaugh guided the program to the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA national championship. The school hired Dave Elson, safeties coach at West Virginia since February, as head coach to succeed Harbaugh. Elson had spent seven years as an assistant at Western Kentucky, including serving as defensive coordinator for the 2002 Division I-AA national championship team ... Aaron Keen was selected as head coach at Illinois College to replace Tom Rowland. For the past eight seasons, Keen has been with the program at Washington (Missouri) and has served as offensive coordinator there since 1998.
Football assistants -- Purdue chose Phil Elmassian as defensive backs coach ... Southern California promoted Ed Orgeron to assistant head coach, Tim Davis to offensive line coach, and Rocky Seto to assistant in charge of safeties. Orgeron was defensive line coach and Davis was guards and centers coach ... Greg Adkins was named as tight ends, assistant offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee. Adkins, who replaces Mike Barry, was offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Troy State ... East Carolina selected Rick Stockstill as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Lonnie Galloway as wide receivers coach and Art Kaufman as defensive line coach. Stockstill has been at Clemson for 14 seasons, most recently fulfilling duties as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Galloway has been with Elon for four seasons, most recently as quarterbacks coach, and Kaufman was defensive coordinator for two seasons at Arkansas Tech ... Lyle Setencich was named as defensive coordinator at Texas Tech to replace Greg McMackin. Setencich most recently was an assistant coach at California. The school also elevated former linebackers coach Ruffin McNeill to assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and defensive assistant coach ... Kevin Ramsey was hired as cornerbacks coach at Arizona State to replace Ron English. Ramsey formerly spent three years as defensive backs coach for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and formerly served as an assistant at Georgia and Tennessee ... Stanford named A.J. Christoff as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach and named Bill Cubit as quarterbacks coach. Christoff has spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator at Cincinnati and Cubit has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers for two seasons. The school also announced wide receivers coach David Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dave Tipton was named as assistant head coach and associate recruiting coordinator. Special teams coach and tight ends coach Tom Quinn assumed additional duties as recruiting coordinator and assistants Matt Doyle and Keith Buckley were awarded additional responsibilities as associate directors of football operations ... Western Carolina's Cary Godette resigned as assistant head coach to become defensive line coach for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. The school promoted special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Matt Rhule to assistant head coach and named tight ends coach Myron Jackson as defensive line coach. Todd Varn, running backs coach, was chosen as offensive coordinator ... Tony Thompson was hired as defensive coordinator at Franklin and Marshall. Thompson served as outside linebackers coach, assistant special teams coordinator and video coordinator at Pennsylvania during the 2001 and 2002 seasons ... Casey Bradley, an assistant at North Dakota State for seven years, will continue with the school and retain responsibilities as linebackers coach and assistant head coach ... Charlie Sadler was appointed as defensive line coach at Texas Tech to replace Ron Harris. Sadler, formerly an assistant at Northern Illinois, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Missouri, most recently has been head coach at Lake Travis (Texas) High School ... Syracuse hired Todd Littlejohn as defensive backs coach to replace Tim Walton. Littlejohn has been defensive backs coach and special teams coach at UCLA for two years.
Men's and women's golf -- Gerald Fitzgerald was named as head men's coach at Saint Rose.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Robert Burke will not return as head women's coach at Hamline.
Men's soccer -- CCNY appointed Osborne Carter as head coach ... Albright awarded Thomas Greenawalt with additional responsibilities as head men's coach. Greenawalt will continue as head women's soccer coach ... Cal State Los Angeles hired Chris Chamides as head men's and women's coach to succeed interim head coach Isabelle Harvey, who will return to assistant coaching responsibilities. Chamides has been senior director of soccer with Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes ... Rutgers-Newark tabbed Anthony Clarke as head coach. Clarke, who succeeds Eddie Ballas, was assistant men's and women's coach at Slippery Rock from 1997 to 2000 ... New Jersey Institute of Technology head coach Ricky Hill will not return next season ... Tom Rivet was hired as head coach at Westfield State. Rivet, who served as head coach at Longmeadow (Massachusetts) High School from 1996 to 2001, succeeds Paul Whalley ... B.J. Craig was selected as head coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania). For the past five seasons, Craig, who succeeds Fernando Barboto, has been an assistant at Dartmouth.
Women's soccer -- Dragos Herinean was chosen as head coach at CCNY ... Jannine Calhoun, head coach at La Salle, resigned ... Newberry hired Juan Favero as head coach to replace Jonathan Wilson, who was released. Favero has been head men's and women's coach at NAIA-member Missouri Baptist University for four seasons.
Softball assistant -- Rhode Island College named Kristen Norberg as an assistant. Norberg retired in 2001 after 18 seasons as head women's volleyball coach at the school and formerly was an assistant softball coach with the program from 1988 to 1994.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Christine Honig resigned as head women's coach at Marist, effective March 3, but will continue as the school's head women's water polo coach. The school awarded additional responsibilities to Larry Van Wagner as head women's coach. Van Wagner will retain duties as head men's swimming coach ... Cindy Rumbaugh resigned as head women's swimming coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania).
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Marist elevated Melanie Bolstad to associate head swimming coach and diving coach.
Men's and women's tennis -- Greg Patton was chosen as head men's coach at Boise State ... Syracuse tabbed Ana Radeljevic as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Jay Hoffman resigned as head women's coach at Cal Lutheran ... Ursinus appointed Diane Hagan as head women's coach ... Peg Scofield, head coach at Yale, was reassigned to administrative duties in the athletics department ... Chris Stanley was chosen as head coach at Pacific (Oregon). Stanley, formerly head coach at California and Portland State, has coached at St. Mary's Academy in Portland, Oregon, for the past two seasons ... Robert Morris appointed Rob Thomas as head women's coach. Thomas, who succeeds Tim Horsmon, has been top assistant at South Alabama for two seasons.
Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Erin Holahan was named as an assistant at Buffalo (New York), succeeding Randy Syracuse. Holahan was an assistant at Daemen College in 2002 ... Gokhan Yilmaz was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Cameron. Yilmaz spent the past season as an assistant women's coach at Western New Mexico.
Wrestling -- Cornell (Iowa) head coach Curt Heideman resigned. Heideman, who also served as an assistant football coach, assistant strength and conditioning coach and compliance officer, has been with the school since August 1996.
STAFF
Sports information -- McMurry named Patrick Stewart as sports information director to succeed interim SID Bruce Unrue and Adam Ledyard, who resigned. Stewart has been sports information director at Lewis and Clark.
CONFERENCES
Ted Hurwitz, executive director of the City University of New York Athletic Conference, plans to retire, effective June 30, 2003. Hurwitz has been with the conference since September 1991.
ASSOCIATIONS
Chris Sanders was elevated to general sales manager for the collegiate division of Host Communications. For the past year, Sanders has worked as general manager of the athletics marketing agreement Host has with Notre Dame. Host also announced the resignation of Graham Edwards, senior vice-president for the collegiate division. Edwards has been with the organization since 1999 ... The College Football Hall of Fame named Courtney Mattison as director of marketing and named Mike Stack as public and community relations coordinator. Mattison has been director of operations at the hall of fame for the past four years and Stack has been a television sports anchor and reporter for the past five years.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Mark Bedics was named as assistant director of media coordination for championships. Bedics has been an assistant director of statistics.
Costa Kittles, former head baseball coach at Florida A&M, died February 21 at the age of 75. Kittles played football and baseball as a collegian at the school in the 1940s and early 1950s. During his tenure as head baseball coach, which extended from 1960 to 1983, he guided the Rattlers to a 401-128 record.
George Kelly, former assistant football coach at Notre Dame, died March 3. He was 75. Kelly was an assistant with the school from 1969 until 1986 when he joined the athletics administration at the school. He also was an assistant at Marquette and Nebraska.
Former Bucknell head football coach Tom Gadd died of cancer March 1. Gadd, 55, had led the team since 1994 but did not coach last season due to the illness. He was Patriot League coach of the year in 1997.
Former Connecticut State University system and Fredonia State President Dallas Beal died December 29. Beal was 76.
Mike Sheldt, a member of the swimming team at Hawaii, drowned during practice March 4. He was 18.
Pete Taylor, an athletics administrator and broadcaster at Iowa State, died March 5. Taylor, 57, was an associate athletics director and was completing his 33rd season as radio play-by-play "Voice of the Cyclones." The four-time Iowa sportscaster of the year, who called football and basketball games for the school, joined Iowa State on a full-time basis in 1990 as director of athletics fund-raising. He was a 1967 graduate of Iowa, where he competed on the baseball team.
