Most recently, Burns has served as a graduate assistant golf coach. Although she assisted both the men's and women's teams, her focus primarily was on the women's side. The squad captured the 2002 South Atlantic Conference championship and finished the 2001-02 season ranked 15th in the nation.
Burns was a four-year member of the Tusculum women's team, where she is the only player in school history to compete in every event during her playing career. A two-time all-South Atlantic Conference honoree, she helped Tusculum earn conference championships in 2000 and 2001.
Burns earned a bachelor of arts degree in business management and accounting from Tusculum in May 2001. She currently is completing coursework for a master's in business administration at Wingate in addition to serving as a PGA apprentice and assistant golf professional at Eagle Chase Golf Club.

Baseball assistant -- J.R. Richard was announced as a volunteer pitching coach at Texas Southern. Richard competed professionally with MLB's Houston Astros from 1976 to 1980.
Men's basketball -- Central Arkansas reassigned head coach Charles Hervey and announced David James as interim head coach ... Chicago State released Bo Ellis as head coach and appointed assistant coach Kevin Jones as interim head coach. Ellis has guided the program for five years. Jones joined the squad this year after formerly serving as associate head coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... Joe Mondragon was released as head coach at Western New Mexico.
Women's basketball -- David Glass resigned as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, effective at the end of the season. Glass, who has been head coach since the 1996-97 season, formerly was an assistant coach from 1983 to 1988. The school announced Beth Cunningham, associate head coach, as Glass' successor.
Women's basketball assistant -- Natalia Isaac, an assistant at Southern, was reassigned to administrative duty in the athletics department at the school.
Field hockey assistant -- Kelly McCollum was elevated to associate head coach at Northwestern. McCollum has been an assistant coach with the program since 2000.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Jamie Fischer was added as an assistant women's coach at Northwestern. Fischer, who has most recently served as a volunteer assistant at the school, replaces Mike Henry.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Dan Fridgen, head men's coach at Rensselaer, signed a three-year contract extension.
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Jay Motta was hired as a part-time assistant men's coach at Delaware. Motta will continue as a full-time physical education teacher at the Independence (Delaware) School.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Hofstra tabbed Christine McPike as graduate assistant coach.
Men's soccer -- Evansville awarded head coaching responsibilities to Dave Golan. Golan, who succeeds the retired Fred Schmalz, served as head coach at Appalachian State for two years ... Jim McElderry was named as head coach at Fordham ... Chuck Schimpf was hired as head coach at Farmingdale State. For the past five years, Schimpf has served as head coach at Suffolk Community College-Western Campus ... Gettysburg tabbed Devin O'Neill as head men's soccer coach and assistant men's and women's tennis coach ... Fernando Barboto was awarded head coaching duties at Iona ... East Carolina named Michael Benn as interim head coach.

Softball assistant -- Delaware tabbed Carolyn Wasilewski as a graudate assistant coach. The 2001 graduate of the school also is currently completing coursework for a master's degree in exercise science and biomechanics.
Men's and women's track and field -- Western Oregon's John Knight announced plans to retire at the end of the 2003 season, but he will continue as a faculty member in the physical education department. In addition to his tenure at Western Oregon, which began in 1980, Knight coached at Concordia University (Nebraska), Linfield, Valparaiso and at the high-school level ... Sylvia Kamp was chosen as interim head men's and women's track and cross country coach at Butler. Kamp takes over for Joe Franklin, who has taken a medical leave of absence.
Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Russ Buller was named as an assistant at McNeese State. Buller, a nationally ranked pole vaulter, is the LSU indoor and outdoor men's pole vaulting record holder and was a seven-time all-America selection ... Albert Perry resigned as an assistant coach at Southern.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Evansville tabbed Mike Swan as head women's coach. The 2001 Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year has been head coach at Morehead State for five years ... Franklin and Marshall appointed Mary Kate Boland as head women's coach ... Missy Gragg assumed responsibilities as head women's coach at Tusculum. Gragg, who replaces Beth Birky, has been head coach at Pikeville (Kentucky) College for five years ... South Alabama selected Nicole Keshock as head coach. Rivera has been a referee with the league since 1999 and has been a Division I referee for 19 years ... Conference USA awarded Gerald Austin, coordinator of football officials, a two-year contract extension ... Ron English was appointed as interim commissioner at the Ohio Valley Conference. English currently is an associate commissioner.
ASSOCIATIONS
Robin Green Harris, former NCAA associate chief of staff for Division I and former governance liaison to the NCAA Executive Committee, joined the collegiate sports practice group for the law firm of Ice Miller.

Elaine Driscol was elevated to coordinator for the Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Driscol has been executive assistant for Division I Women's Basketball.
CORRECTIONS
The photo attributed to the 1973 Division III champion Wittenberg University football team in the Looking Back section of the January 6 NCAA News actually was a photo of the 1975 Wittenberg championship team.
Logan Tom was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top female athlete in the sport of volleyball. Tom, a senior outside hitter at Stanford, was the Pacific-10 Conference player of the year. The two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association national player of the year finished her playing career as Stanford's all-time kills leader.
John A. Synodinos, president emeritus at Lebanon Valley, died December 26. He was 68.
Missouri Western State Athletics Director Pete Chapman died of cancer January 13. Chapman, 53, had been at Missouri Western State since April 1999. He formerly was athletics director at Wayne State (Nebraska) from 1988 to 1999 and coached football there from 1983 to 1988. Chapman also coached football and baseball at Yankton College, served as an assistant football coach at South Dakota State and as head football coach at the high-school level.
Eric Kloiber, sports information director at Bernard Baruch, died January 13. He was 35.
Former Dartmouth football all-American Robert MacLeod died January 13 from complications from a stroke. MacLeod competed in football and basketball at the school in the late 1930s, earning all-America recognition and a fourth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1938.
Clarence R. Moll, president emeritus at Widener, died December 29. He was 89. Moll was selected as president of Widener, then Pennsylvania Military College, in 1959 and was instrumental in transforming the school from Widener College in 1972 to Widener University in 1979. Moll retired and was named chancellor in 1981. The title of president emeritus was conferred in 1988.
Sean Fenton, Kyle Burnat and Nicholas Grass, Yale student-athletes, died in a recent automobile accident. Fenton, 20, was a junior who competed on the football team as a freshman. Burnat, 19, was a sophomore pitcher on the school's baseball team. He allowed three hits and one run in three appearances as a freshman. Grass, also 19, built a 1-3 record in 21.2 innings and 13 appearances with the baseball team. He was a sophomore.
William T. Cloney, former sports information director at Northeastern, died January 16. He was 91. Cloney served as an English and journalism teacher at Northeastern as well as sports information director from 1947 to 1953. Cloney was race director for the Boston Marathon from 1947 to 1982 and was president of the Boston Athletic Association from 1964 to 1982.
Former Seton Hall student-athlete, coach and administrator Richard J. Regan died December 24. Regan, who as a basketball student-athlete helped the school capture a National Invitation Tournament championship in the early 1950s, spent 10 years as head coach of the men's basketball team and was named athletics director in 1971. In the 1980s, Regan served as the first executive director of the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund and in 1998 he was appointed as special assistant to the vice-president for university affairs.
