Alabama State selects Cosby as new AD

Alabama State has chosen Richard Cosby as director of athletics.

Since 2000, Cosby has been athletics director at Stillman, his second tour of duty at the school. He also was athletics director at Stillman from 1973 to 1991, in addition to serving as head baseball coach. He guided the program to five straight Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and was named conference coach of the year from 1983 to 1988. Cosby also completed tenures as athletics director at Lincoln (Missouri) (1991-93) and at Clark Atlanta (1993-00).

Cosby earned a doctorate in sports administration and physical education from the Union Institute for Advanced Studies, a master of arts in social work administration from Tennessee and a bachelor of science in physical education/elementary education from Delta State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Malcolm Gillis announced plans to retire as president at Rice, effective June 30, 2004 ... Mississippi State named Charles Lee as president. Lee has been filling the post on an interim basis ... Richard A. Levao was named as president at Bloomfield, effective June 1. Levao has been a partner in a New Jersey law firm ... Grove City President John Moore announced retirement plans, effective June 30.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Cory Schwartz was appointed as director of athletics and recreation at Alaska Fairbanks. Schwartz most recently has been at Evansville ... Minnesota State Moorhead's Katy Wilson resigned as athletics director, effective June 30 ... Paul Ruddy, athletics director at Lewis for the past 25 years, announced plans to retire, effective July 1. Ruddy has been with the school's athletics department for 42 years.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Dartmouth promoted Diane Armento to associate director of athletics for intercollegiate programs.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Marshall selected Ricky Hazel as assistant athletics director for media relations. Hazel has served as sports information director at the school since 1999 ... Heather MacCulloch was named as an assistant director of athletics and compliance officer at Bloomfield.

COACHES

Baseball -- Jim Miller announced plans to retire as head baseball coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater, effective at the end of the 2003 season. Miller, who has spent the past 16 years as head baseball coach, joined the school in 1969 and also has completed stints as equipment manager, assistant and head basketball coach and assistant baseball coach.

Baseball assistant -- Kyle DiEduardo assumed duties as a volunteer assistant coach at Winthrop.

Women's basketball -- Liz Feeley was named as head coach at Smith. For the past two seasons, Feeley has fulfilled head coaching duties on an interim basis ... New Mexico State appointed Elmer Chavez as interim head coach to take over for Marlene Stollings, an assistant coach who resigned after most recently serving as interim head coach. Chavez has been an assistant men's basketball coach at the school for the past two and a half seasons.

Women's basketball assistants -- New Mexico State assistant coaches Derek Jordan and Josh Pearson resigned. The school announced Greg Berry as an assistant coach. Berry formerly was an assistant men's coach at the school from 1975 to 1985.

Men's and women's fencing assistant -- David Ling was chosen as an assistant coach at Penn State.

Field hockey -- Beth Bozman resigned as head coach at Princeton ... Smith chose Judy Strong as head field hockey coach and interim head women's lacrosse coach.

Football -- Fitz Hill, head coach at San Jose State, was awarded a contract extension through 2006. Hill has guided the program for two seasons ... New Mexico Highlands promoted John Fassel to head coach to succeed Greg Critchett. Fassel was quarterbacks and receivers coach during the 2002 season ... Rose-Hulman appointed Ted Karras as head coach ... Heidelberg hired Brian Cochran as head coach to replace John Cervino, who resigned. Cochran, who has been defensive line coach at Ohio Northern this past season, formerly was special teams coordinator, linebackers coach and defensive line coach at Heidelberg from 1998 to 2001 in addition to serving as head wrestling coach for two seasons ... Ted J. Stanley was hired as head coach at Kenyon. Stanley, who has been co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Chicago for two seasons, replaces Vince Arduini.

Football assistants -- North Alabama named Matt Wallerstedt as defensive coordinator ... Charlie Partridge assumed responsibilities as defensive ends coach at Pittsburgh ... Bill Cubit resigned as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers ... Mike Archer was appointed as defensive coordinator and Ron Caragher was tabbed as running backs coach at Kentucky ... Southern Methodist added Blake Miller as offensive line coach and chose Darrell Patterson as linebackers coach ... John Rushing was named as secondary coach at Utah State. Rushing, who replaces Derrick Odom, has been secondary coach at Montana State for three years ... Cincinnati chose Steve Shankweiler as offensive line coach ... Craig Ver Steeg was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers, replacing Bill Cubit. For the past two years, Ver Steeg has worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah. ... Gary Goff Jr. was selected as wide receivers coach and Mason Miller was appointed as running backs coach at Southeastern Louisiana ... Montana State elevated Joe O'Brien to assistant head coach. O'Brien, who takes over for Butch Damberger, has been defensive line coach for three seasons ... Larry McDaniel was tabbed as defensive line coach at Kent State. McDaniel, who has been an assistant at Ball State for the past four seasons, succeeds Kurt Barber. The school also announced that Lonnie Messick will move to inside linebackers coach, Ron Wright will move to outside linebackers coach and Mike Drake, offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, will become special assistant coach in charge of defensive backs ... Alabama chose Buddy Wyatt as defensive line coach. Most recently, Wyatt has been defensive line coach at Texas A&M ... Dale Perine was selected as defensive line coach at Jackson State ... Ronnie Vinklarek assumed responsibilities as offensive line coach at Middle Tennessee ... UCLA hired Brian Schneider as linebackers and nickel backs coach and appointed Robert Lopez as director of football operations. Schneider has been tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at Colorado State for six years. Since April 2001, Lopez has worked as executive director of enrollment services and director of admissions at Wisconsin-Eau Claire ... David Elson was tabbed as an assistant coach at West Virginia. Elson has spent seven seasons as an assistant at Western Kentucky, most recently fulfilling duties as defensive coordinator ... Toby Strange was named as quarterbacks coach at Citadel ... Jackson State added Leon Perry as offensive coordinator and Mike Talbert as linebackers coach. Koenning most recently was head coach at Wyoming before being released in November 2002 ... Ross Els was appointed as defensive coordinator at New Mexico State to succeed Steve Stanard. Els, who has been with the program since 2001, has served as safeties, linebackers and special teams coach ... Colorado State added Steve Stanard as defensive coordinator, Darrell Funk as tight ends and special teams coach and James Ward as secondary coach. Stanard replaces Larry Kerr and has been defensive coordinator at New Mexico State since 1999. Funk, tight ends coach at Northern Illinois last season, succeeds Brian Schneider. Ward, who replaces Marvin Sanders, was defensive coordinator at Idaho State for two seasons ... Montana State chose Marcel Yates as secondary coach, Mike McCafferty as defensive assistant, Brandon Vancleeve as tight ends coach and Jason McEndoo as offensive line coach.

Men's and women's golf -- North Carolina-Wilmington's Grant Robbins resigned as head men's coach to become head men's coach at Memphis.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Mike Waldvogel resigned as head men's coach at Yale. The school appointed Darryl Delia as interim head men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Jon Reese was selected as interim associate men's coach at Yale ... Richard Stockton chose Morgan Klotz as an assistant men's coach ... Carl Haas and Mike McCarthy were added as assistant men's coaches at St. Andrews Presbyterian.

Women's soccer -- Girish Thakar was awarded additional responsibilities as head women's soccer coach at Westminster (Pennsylvania) and will relinquish his post as assistant track and field coach. Thakar, who has been the school's head men's soccer coach for the past five seasons, served as interim head women's coach during the 2002 season ... Nicole Van Dyke accepted responsibilities as head coach at Cal State Stanislaus, replacing Joe Michelena. For the past two seasons, Van Dyke has been an assistant coach and athletics facilities coordinator at Cal State Bakersfield ... Belmont selected Chris Bosworth as head coach. Bosworth, who replaces Sterling Nabours, has been top assistant men's soccer coach at the school for the past for seasons.

Women's soccer assistants -- Renee Rice was promoted to full-time assistant coach at Belmont after most recently working as a graduate assistant ... Carthage named Susie McCreery as an assistant coach.

Softball -- Rachel Reif resigned as head coach at UC Riverside. The school named assistant coach Mike Smith as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Softball assistant -- Westminster (Missouri) hired Rachel Swain as an assistant coach. Swain is a 2002 graduate of the school and was a four-year letter-winner on the softball team.

Synchronized swimming -- Lisa Riddell was named as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Tim Horsmon was selected as head women's coach at Dayton to replace Pete Hoyer. As head women's coach at Robert Morris for the past four years, Horsmon guided the school to three Northeast Conference regular-season championships and four conference tournament championships ... St. Catherine hired Nicole Hess as head coach. Hess was an assistant at St. Thomas (Minnesota) for one year ... Jacksonville tabbed Courtney Dipert as head coach ... Angela Kearns was awarded head coaching duties at Lander. Kearns, who succeeds Salley Palmer, was head coach at Converse last season ... Ohio named Geoff Carlston as head women's coach ... Deane Webb accepted duties as head coach at Belmont to succeed Jill Simons. Webb has been coaching at East Tennessee State for the past two seasons ... Ashland tabbed Connie Surowicz as head women's coach. Surowicz has led the program at Wittenberg for nine years and also was an assistant athletics director at the school.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Santiago Restrepo was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Southern Mississippi ... Adams State hired Lisa Crowder as an assistant coach. Crowder was a four-year starter on the school's women's team before ending her career in 2002 ... Jodi Steffers was tabbed as an assistant at Clemson.

STAFF

Academic services -- Belmont appointed Colette Keyser as academic coordinator. Keyser has been filling the post on an interim basis since October 2002.

CONFERENCES

Patrick Summers resigned as assistant commissioner for championships and information technology at the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Summers joined the conference as an intern for championships in 1996 ... The Southern Conference chose Doug King as assistant commissioner for compliance and Stephanie Ellison as director of legislative services and assistant to the commissioner ... The Southeastern Conference hired Torie Johnson as compliance assistant. Since September 2001, Johnson has served as director of media relations at the Southland Conference.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) promoted Bob Vecchione to senior associate executive director and promoted Pat Manak to associate executive director. Vecchione has been with NACDA since 1992 and had fulfilled responsibilities as associate executive director since 1996. Manak joined the association in 1995 and has been assistant executive director, administration, since 2001 ... The National Football Foundation named Cosmo J. Iacavazzi as director of corporate development.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Mweni Ekpo resigned as associate director of membership services/Division III governance liaison at the national office.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded University of Virginia men's soccer coach George Gelnovatch and fined him $300 for misconduct displayed during the second round of the 2002 Division I Men's Soccer Championship.Specifically, Gelnovatch made inappropriate comments to the media that were critical of the officiating during Virginia's second-round loss to the College of William and Mary.

NOTABLES

The University and Northwest Sertoma Club of Columbus, Ohio, announced the following as winners of the 2003 Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Awards: Division I men's -- Jason Johnson, Arizona, football; Division I women's -- Lauren Shenk, Ohio State, basketball; Division II men's -- Casey Swanson, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (NAIA Division II), soccer; Division II women's -- Jill Theeler, North Dakota State, track; Division III men's -- Andrew Hilliard, St. Thomas (Minnesota), football; and Division III women's -- Andrea Pawliczek, Emory, soccer and basketball. The award honors winners for demonstrating academic, athletics and community-service excellence.

Bruce Eugene, sophomore quarterback at Grambling, was named winner of the Alonzo S. "Jake" Gaither Award. The honor recognizes the nation's top football player from a historically black college or university. Eugene set school records by passing for 4,455 yards and 43 touchdowns. He also rushed for 515 yards and nine touchdowns to help Grambling capture the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship for the third season in a row.

DEATHS

Ron Herr, former head baseball coach at Marian (Wisconsin), died December 9. Herr was 62.

Dennis Fosdick, former Texas A&M water polo coach, died of cancer February 1. He was 63. As head men's water polo coach at Texas A&M, Fosdick guided the school to a record of 189-32-1 and appearances in the national championship in 1975 and 1977. He also established the women's team at the school in the 1970s. The U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame inductee also spent 11 years as head women's coach at Occidental where he led squads to eight straight Division III national championship appearances and a national championship in 2000. Additionally, Fosdick served as U.S. team leader for the 1981 World Junior Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games and the 1988 Olympic Games.
