Hiram has selected Tim Rice as head men's basketball coach to succeed Sean McDonnell.
Rice has been an assistant at Grove City since 2000. He also guided the golf and cross country programs at the school. Rice worked as an assistant basketball coach at Williams during the 1999-00 season. In addition, he served as athletics director, head men's basketball coach and head men's soccer coach at Calvary College from 1997 to 1999. Rice was head cross country coach at Pillsbury College in 1994.
Rice earned a bachelor of science degree at the University of Mobile in 1993. He also earned a master's degree in sport management and currently is completing a doctorate from the United States Sports Academy.
Rice also will serve as head women's golf coach at Hiram. The program is scheduled to begin competition this spring.
Chief executive officers
William V. Muse resigned as chancellor at East Carolina, effective September 30 ... Ohio President Robert Glidden announced retirement plans, effective June 30 ... Robert M. Berdahl, chancellor at California, announced plans to retire, effective in June. Berdahl will return to a faculty post at the school after a one-year leave.
Directors of athletics
San Diego State hired Mike Bohn as athletics director to replace Rick Bay, who resigned. Bohn has been director of athletics at Idaho for five years ... Laura Liesman was named as director of athletics and recreation at Georgian Court. Liesman has been assistant athletics director and director of summer camps at St. Benedict ... Air Force's Randy Spetman announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective at the end of the semester ... Carey Snyder was appointed as interim athletics director at East Stroudsburg. For the past 16 years, Snyder has worked as an associate athletics director at the school.
Assistant directors of athletics
Mike George was hired as an assistant athletics director for compliance and student services at Albany (New York). Since July 2002, George has been district athletics director for Bourbon County Schools in Kentucky ... Nazareth elevated Joe Seil and Annette Shapiro to assistant athletics directors. Seil has been sports information director at the school for 17 years. Shapiro has served as head men's and women's tennis coach for 18 seasons and also is senior woman administrator ... Jeff Andriesse was appointed as assistant athletics director for communications at Seton Hall, succeeding Marie Wozniak. Since 1998, Andriesse has been associate sports information director at the school.
Coaches
Baseball -- Vassar selected Chris Campassi as interim head coach.
Baseball assistant -- Shepherd chose Kris Kann as an assistant. Kann is a 2002 graduate of Mansfield and has been pitching coach there for the past two seasons.
Men's basketball -- Sean McDonnell was appointed as head coach at Case Western Reserve ... Ken Shields, head coach at Northern Kentucky, announced plans to retire after the 2003-04 season. Shields has guided the program for 15 seasons ... Tim Rice was hired as head men's basketball coach and head women's golf coach at Hiram. Rice, who replaces Sean McDonnell as head basketball coach, has been an assistant men's basketball coach at Grove City since 2000 ... Salem State announced Sean Doherty as head coach to replace Brian Meehan. Doherty has worked at Holy Cross for the past four seasons, most recently as associate head coach ... Manhattanville hired Dean Meminger as head coach. Meminger, who replaces Brian Curtin, formerly played professionally in the NBA and has spent the past three years as a consultant at Hunter for men's and women's basketball.
Men's basketball assistants -- Wayne State (Michigan) named E.J. Haralson Jr. as an assistant coach. Haralson has been head coach at Detroit Finney (Michigan) High School for two seasons ... Bill Cumplido was selected as associate head coach and Colin Tabb and Dennis Kazimir were added as assistants coaches at Rhode Island College. Cumplido has been an assistant at New Hampshire. Tabb was a premium sales associate for MLB's Boston Red Sox and formerly played basketball professionally in Germany in 2002-03. Kazimir spent 2002-03 as a member of the operations department of the Hoop Group, assisting with the planning and monitoring of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camps and Clinics ... Albright appointed J.J. Demarco as an assistant coach ... Kim Lewis accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at McNeese State ... Lamont Franklin, Stephen Miss and Luke Strege were added as assistants at Towson ... Tod Hessong was chosen as an assistant coach at Scranton ... CCNY chose Ernie Myers as an assistant coach ... Steve Groothuis assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Delaware. Groothuis, who spent last year as director of basketball operations at Youngstown State, succeeds John Moseley ... San Diego promoted Brian Fish to associate head coach. Fish enters his second season with the program.
Women's basketball -- Cheryl Dozier signed a contract extension as head coach at Buffalo (New York) through the 2005-06 season. Dozier has guided the program for five seasons ... Gardner-Webb appointed Serena King as head coach ... Alisa DiBonaventura was awarded head coaching duties at Widener, succeeding Chris Day, who resigned. DiBonaventura has been an assistant at Delaware Valley.
Women's basketball assistants -- Franklin & Marshall awarded additional responsibilities to Melissa Reiss as an assistant women's basketball coach. Reiss will continue as head women's field hockey coach ... Carrie Timmins was hired as an assistant at Delaware, where she was a four-year letter-winner on the basketball squad. Timmins takes over for Megan Dellagrotti ... Lehman added Isabel Gonzalez as an assistant coach ... Michael Wells was named as an assistant coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Rachael Molesky was hired as an assistant at Hood. Most recently, Molesky has worked as an assistant at Linganore (Maryland) High School and currently serves as a health and physical education instructor at Middletown (Maryland) Middle School ... Stony Brook selected Tricia Floyd as an assistant coach ... Molly Marrin was chosen as an assistant at Northern Colorado. Marrin is a 2003 graduate of Regis (Colorado), where she was four-year member of the women's basketball squad.
Football -- Missouri Southern's Bill Cooke resigned as head coach. The school named offensive coordinator Rob Green as interim head coach ... Ben Blacknall was released as head coach at Delaware State. The school chose Butch Posey as interim coach ... Tom Horne, head coach at Valparaiso, was awarded a contract extension through the 2006 season ... Army released Todd Berry as head coach. Berry has been head coach since December 1999. The school announced defensive line coach John Mumford as interim head coach.
Men's and women's golf -- Jeff Pulli was named as head women's coach at William Smith. The program is scheduled to begin competition this fall. Pulli is the club professional at Clifton Springs Country Club in New York.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wesleyan (Connecticut) named Chris Potter as interim head men's ice hockey and golf coach.
Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Wentworth Institute selected John Rose as an assistant men's coach. Rose is an April 2003 graduate of New England, where he was a four-year letter-winner on the ice hockey team.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Amy McCleary and Kim Wayne were added as assistants at James Madison.
Men's soccer assistant -- Saby Antao was hired as an assistant at Hunter.
Women's soccer -- Tom Romano resigned as head women's soccer coach, head men's and women's swimming coach and intramural director at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Women's soccer assistant -- Caldwell chose Vito Veneruso as an assistant coach.
Softball assistant -- Fresno State named Marcie Green-Jones as an assistant. Green-Jones, who has been an assistant at College of Sequoias for three years, replaces Laura Berg.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Sue Hadfield was selected as head men's and women's coach at Ursinus ... Jean-Paul Gowdy was hired as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). Most recently, Gowdy has been a graduate assistant at Springfield.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- James Madison selected Warrick Mann as head men's and women's diving coach ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) chose Danielle Petrone as diving coach.
Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Franklin & Marshall appointed Mark Moshos as an assistant men's coach.
Men's and women's track and field -- Dave Nash was awarded responsibilities as head men's and women's track and cross country coach at Morningside.
Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Erin Humphreys assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Auburn ... Seton Hall tabbed Marian Johnson as an assistant men's and women's coach ... Texas-San Antonio named Jerry Dyes as an assistant coach. Dyes formerly has coached at Northwestern State, Louisiana Tech and Abilene Christian.
Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Paige Karno and Heather Evans were named as assistants at St. Benedict.
Wrestling assistant -- Penn State tabbed Tim Dernlan as an assistant coach.
Staff
Academic services -- Albany (New York) named Julie Steinke as director of athletics academic support services. Steinke was assistant athletics director for student services and compliance at St. Bonaventure.
Academic services assistant -- Albany (New York) appointed Eddie Scott as assistant director of athletics academic support services. Scott is a graduate of the school, where he was captain of the 2002 baseball squad.
Athletic trainers -- Cincinnati chose David Fluker and Bryan Matson as athletic trainers. Fluker, who replaces Jayd Grossman, has been athletic trainer and administrative assistant at Xavier for seven years, and Matson has been athletic trainer for men's basketball and men's and women's golf at Central Florida for three years.
Assistant athletic trainer -- Jennifer Kawamoto was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Seton Hall. Kawamoto has been a graduate assistant trainer at Stanford.
Facilities -- Seton Hall added Chad Thompson as facility manager.
Marketing/promotions -- CCNY awarded Andy Stampfel with additional responsibilities as director of sports marketing. Stampfel will continue as head men's basketball coach at the school.
Marketing/promotions assistant -- Eric Seidelman was chosen as assistant marketing and promotions director at Eastern Michigan.
Sports information -- Maryville hired Nicole Peloquin as sports information director. For the past two years, Peloquin has been sports information director at Marietta.
Sports information assistant -- Kyle Stephens was hired as an assistant sports information director at Texas-San Antonio. Stephens, who has been an athletics media relations assistant at Texas for the past two years, succeeds Bill Petitt.
Conferences
Conference USA announced Charolette Hunt as director of compliance. Hunt has been assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at Texas-Pan American ... Joe DelBalso was hired as assistant commissioner at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. DelBalso, who replaces Larry Keating, has been with the Empire Sports Network for 11 years, most recently serving as director of programming.
Associations
Lee Reed was named as chairperson of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship awards committee, which is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Reed, who is director of athletics at Cleveland State, replaces Albany (New York) Athletics Director Lee McElroy.
Corrections
In the September 29 issue of The NCAA News, a Division II milestone incorrectly reported the opponent when North Dakota State University volleyball coach Zaundra Bina achieved her 350th career victory. North Dakota State's August 30 opponent was Northern State University ... The position for which David Perchinsky was hired for at Wisconsin-Whitewater was listed incorrectly in the September 29 issue of The NCAA Record. Perchinsky was named as an assistant coach at the school and will serve under head coach John Vodenlich, who took over the program in June.
The school at which Joseph DeBenedictis served as a student assistant was incorrectly listed in the October 13 issue of The NCAA Record. DeBenedictis was a student assistant in the sports information office at New Jersey City and was recently selected as assistant athletics director and sports information director at Mount St. Vincent.
Former Minnesota quarterback Bobby Cox died of pancreatic cancer October 3. Cox began his collegiate career at Washington but transferred to Minnesota.
Bill Cahill, head women's ice hockey coach at Rensselaer, died of a heart attack October 5. He was 53. Cahill, last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference East coach of the year, was beginning his fourth season as head coach and formerly had been head coach at Norwich and Assumption.
Thomas Bonner, president emeritus at Wayne State (Michigan), Union (New York) and New Hampshire, died September 2. Bonner was 80.
Former St. Thomas (Minnesota) president James Shannon died August 28. Shannon was 82.
Otis Singletary, former president at Kentucky, died September 20 at the age of 81.
Former St. John's (New York) President Joseph T. Cahill died September 27. Cahill was 84.
Shana Virginia Eriksson, an equestrian student-athlete at Fresno State, died of head injuries after being thrown from her horse while riding. Eriksson, 18, was a freshman at the school.
Former North Carolina football running back Charlie "Choo-Choo" Justice died October 17 at the age of 79. Justice, who was second in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1948 and 1949, went on to play professionally in the NFL from 1950 to 1954.
