Trinity (Texas) became the first Division III men's soccer champion with an unblemished record since 1997 by dispatching Drew, 2-1, November 30 in Madison, New Jersey.

The 24-0 Tigers won the battle between teams making their first championship-game appearance. The game also featured Trinity's high-powered offense, which had scored at least five goals in a game 11 times this season, against Drew's stingy defense, which shut out 17 straight opponents until giving up a goal in the semifinal match against Wheaton (Illinois).

Trinity's offense struck first when the Tigers' Alex Woods headed in a cross from Rusty Harrington in the 25th minute of play. Josh Smith then scored five minutes into the second half to double the margin.

Drew's goal came in the 63rd minute when Michael Woessner connected on a rebound after a Derek Swanner miss.

The Rangers nearly missed tying the game when Jonathan Aliaga's shot hit the crossbar with 13 minutes to play. Michael Jacobson also narrowly missed later in the game. Drew outshot the Tigers, 18-10.

"The mentality of this team is to fight to the end," Aliaga said of the 20-2-3 Rangers. "I was confident the game-tying goal was going to come, but we just ran out of time."

Drew nearly ran out of time in its semifinal match against Wheaton (Illinois). After Rangers goalkeeper Peter Boyer saw his 17-game NCAA all-divisions record shutout streak snapped in the 88th minute, Tyler Brisk headed in a free kick taken by Tim Cordier to tie the game just 28 seconds later. Drew eventually advanced via penalty kicks after the teams played through two scoreless overtime periods.

Trinity advanced from the semifinals with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Junior forward Chris Quinn scored the game- winner with just under three minutes to play in the extra sessions.

"We are a highly motivated team," Quinn said after the semifinal win. "We knew it could be our last game. Nobody wanted that."

Quinn's two goals gave him 25 on the year, which tied a school record. The game-winning goal was his sixth of the season.
