The Division III Women's Soccer Championship game turned out to be a battle between teams looking for their school's first national crown. And for all but the last 30 seconds of regulation play it looked like Chicago would be the first to unlock its trophy case, but Oneonta State's Brooke Davis wrenched the key from the Maroons' grasp.
Davis scored on a direct kick just moments before regulation ended to forge a 1-1 tie, then Oneonta State senior Sanada Mujanovic scored about three minutes into the sudden-death overtime to give the host Red Dragons a 2-1 win November 30 and deliver the school's first title in a team sport.
Mujanovic said her game-winner started out as a cross. She had dribbled to within about 25 yards of the goal before sending the ball toward the net.
"I was just hoping someone was at the other end," she said.
The ball actually hit the top left goal post and dropped to the ground, across the goal line. Players nearby paused to see if it actually was a goal before the celebration broke out.
But it was Davis' goal that may have been even more heartbreaking for Chicago. A late foul against the Maroons gave the Red Dragons a direct kick. Senior Rose Velan served the ball into the box where Chicago goalkeeper Andrea Przybysz tried to control it, but it deflected away. Davis collected the carom and grounded one into the empty net.
"It was a matter of having the right people in the right place at the right time," said Oneonta State head coach Tracey Ranieri.
It was the wrong outcome, though, for Chicago head coach Amy Reifert.
"It's the worst feeling I've ever had in my coaching experience," she said. "We were 30 seconds from winning a national championship."
Chicago scored its goal in the first half when sophomore midfielder Jacqui DeLeon headed the ball past Oneonta State goalkeeper Laura Morcone, who complimented the shot afterward.
"I thought yesterday's goal that The College of New Jersey scored against us was the best, but I would have to change that to this one," Morcone said. "Whether I was one second sooner to the spot wouldn't have made a difference. (DeLeon) made a great play on the ball."
Oneonta State (21-1-3) had to rally to win its semifinal match, too, relying again on Davis to advance to the title game. Davis scored in the 79th minute to break a 1-1 tie.
Chicago (17-2-4) advanced on the strength of sophomore Renee Neuner's game-winning goal in overtime to secure a 2-1 semifinal win over DePauw.
Davis was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player, while Chicago's Dianna Connett earned defensive honors. Joining them on the all-tournament team were Morcone, Patricia Jaeger and Amanda LaPolla of Oneonta State; Neuner and DeLeon of Chicago; Meredith Rinker and Corinne Scott of DePauw; and Brittny Boyd and Lynda Schuster of The College of New Jersey.
