Rain or shine, it doesn't make any difference to Calvin.
The Knights dominated the competition to win the Division III Men's Cross Country Championships team title November 22 at the L.S. Ayers Athletic Complex at Hanover, and they did it in beautiful weather on the same course where just one week earlier they slogged through drizzle and mud to win their regional.
The championship is Calvin's second in the sport and comes after two straight runner-up finishes. The Knights' winning point total of 48 is the second-lowest team score in meet history, behind only North Central's 32 points in 1993.
The Knights also qualified an unprecedented six team members for all-America honors with top-35 individual finishes, led by a pair of juniors -- David Haagsma and Hendrik Kok -- who finished side by side in the top 10.
The time spread between Calvin's first runner and fifth runner (senior Kris Koster) was only 18 seconds, and perhaps more impressively, the Knights' non-scoring sixth runner (senior Matt Edwards) finished only 20 seconds behind Haagsma.
Calvin finished 80 points ahead of runner-up Wisconsin-Stevens Point. North Central finished third and Wisconsin-La Crosse finished fourth, while individual-champion Josh Moen led Wartburg to a fifth-place finish. Defending champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh finished ninth.
"To win a national championship as a team is one of the most incredible accomplishments you can experience in athletics," Calvin coach Brian Diemer said. "To win a national title, it takes everyone to do their part and make it happen. The teamwork that this team had this afternoon and throughout the entire season has been truly remarkable."
The Knights' performance at Hanover was nearly as dominating as their Central region victory a week earlier on the same course, where Calvin swept the top five individual spots. The regional race was run on a wet and slippery course, but the Michigan team showed it handles sunshine just fine, too.
"The running conditions were warm today and some of the teams that were expected to contend for the title had their runners separated," said Al Hoekstra, who assists Diemer with coaching the team. "Our guys were able to keep in sight of each other and at times, they ran as a group. It's the way this team has run all year and that game plan didn't change today."
Both Haagsma and Kok bettered the course record Kok set last week during the regional by eight seconds.
However, the course record now belongs to Wartburg's Moen, who posted the only time under 25 minutes and built an insurmountable lead relatively early in the race to finish with a time of 24:34.4 -- nearly half a minute ahead of freshman Macharia Yuot of Widener.
A junior, Moen joined classmate Missy Buttry of Wartburg in becoming the first pair of runners from the same school to sweep the Division III men's and women's individual titles.
