Sports sponsorship: Guilford College will add four varsity sports in 2004-05, increasing to 16 the number of teams it will sponsor in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition. The new sports are men's and women's cross country, women's swimming and diving, and men's tennis, which returns after being discontinued by the school following the 2002 season. "The addition of these four sports gives Guilford 16 varsity programs, which means it is no longer the smallest coeducational athletics program in the ODAC," said Randy Doss, the school's vice-president of campus life and enrollment. "Each team will be added at minimal cost since the college already has competition venues on campus." The men's tennis team will use an eight-court facility already in use by the Guilford women's tennis team, while the cross country teams will use wooded campus trails and the women's swimming team will use the 25-meter pool in Ragan-Brown Field House. Three of the four teams will be coached by current athletics staff members, and the school is searching for a women's swimming coach and aquatics director.
