Trinity (Texas) built a 17-point advantage over Eastern Connecticut State in the title game of the Division III Women's Basketball Championship but needed a last-second shot to claim its first crown March 22 at Rose-Hulman.

Allison Wooley, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player, hit the game-winning jump shot with 11 seconds remaining to defeat Eastern Connecticut State, 60-58.

"I was trying to get the ball to our point guard," Wooley said. "The lane was wide open. I thought I should take it all the way to the hoop and see if someone stops me. I just did what I'm accustomed to."

Eastern Connecticut State had a chance to tie the game with six seconds remaining. The Warriors got the ball to their leading scorer, Allison Coleman, who made a move to the basket but lost control of her dribble for a moment before getting off a shot that was just short.

"We wanted to get Allison (Coleman) inside for a shot or go to the free-throw line," said Eastern Connecticut State coach Denise Bierly. "She had been struggling a little bit, but she's still our No. 1 option. It didn't turn out like we wanted. I would do it all over again the same way in an identical situation."

The Warriors had overcome a 17-point deficit in the second period with the help of Deanne Prior, who had a game-high 21 points. Coleman finished the game with 14. The Tigers were led by Wooley with 18 points.

The championship wasn't the only close contest. Eastern Connecticut State had knocked off top-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire in an overtime nail-biter in the semifinals, 52-49. Trinity (Texas), which had defeated perennial power Washington (Missouri) en route to the title, beat Rochester, 63-54, to advance.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire survived Rochester in double-overtime for an 82-77 win in the third-place game. Sophomore point guard Katie Murphy hit back-to-back three-pointers in the second overtime to break the game open.

Wooley was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Megan Selmon. Coleman was honored from Eastern Connecticut State, along with Rochester's Kelly Wescott and Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Kristi Channing.
