Wartburg set two team records at the Division III Wrestling Championships, outclassing the competition for the school's third title in the past six years March 8 at Ada, Ohio. The Knights set a new standard for team points, totaling 166 1/2. The margin of victory over second-place Augsburg -- 82 points -- also was a new standard. Montclair State held the previous record for team points with 143 in the 1976 championship.

The Knights ended Augsburg's run of consecutive championships at three. Augsburg placed second with 84 1/2 points, followed by Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Montclair State and Luther.

Wartburg advanced six wrestlers into the final round, tying the record held by Wilkes, which accomplished the feat in 1974. Three of the six Wartburg wrestlers won national titles.

Heath Ropp topped Mitchell Marcks of King's (Pennsylvania) in overtime in the 125-pound bracket; Wil Kelly defeated third-seeded Jim Morgan, also of King's, at 141 pounds; and LeRoy Gardner won in the heavyweight class with a narrow victory over Ryan Allen of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

"I couldn't have asked for anything more in my senior year," Gardner said. "It was a great team win; everyone wrestled their hearts out. You have to win every battle and make every move count toward winning the national tile. You can't just hope to win, you have to take other guys' dreams away."

Three wrestlers capped perfect seasons. One of them, Remi Ratel of Montclair State, was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler after defeating Luther's Garrett Kurth to finish 37-0 on the season.

"Coming into this weekend I expected to do my best," Ratel said. "I've always wanted to be a national champion and I tried to keep mentally focused and take one match at a time. I have been waiting for this my whole life."

Augsburg freshman Marcus LeVesseur defeated Wartburg's Kevin Bratland at the 157-pound class to end his campaign 44-0.

Cody Koenig of Wisconsin-Stevens Point posted his third fall of the tournament, pinning Eduard Aliakseyena of Montclair State in the 174-pound weight bracket to finish to 36-0 on the year.
