Susan Churchwell helped deliver UC Davis its first Division II Softball Championship, blasting two home runs and going 4-for-4 at the plate in a 7-0 win over GC&SU May 18 at Western Oregon.

"I don't think I've ever had a day like this," said Churchwell. "Everything else pales in comparison."

The senior tallied four RBI in the championship game just a few hours after her walk-off home run against defending champion St. Mary's (Texas) gave the Aggies a 5-3 win in eight innings. Churchwell was named the tournament's most outstanding player after finishing the day 6-for-7 with three home runs and seven RBI.

On the mound, Amy Rosson shut out GC&SU, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. She threw 11.2 innings on championship day and finished the tournament allowing just one earned run over 28.2 innings. She was 4-0 in the championship finals and had 45 strikeouts.

The Aggies' scoring started when Rosson hit her first home run in the third inning, knocking in Jennifer Borrelli, who had led off with a walk. Churchwell and Kacey Sevier had RBI singles in the fourth inning. Churchwell's seventh-inning homer was followed by a two-run shot by Lindsay Moore.

"There are no words to describe the feeling," said UC Davis coach Kathy DeYoung, in her 25th season as coach of the Aggies. "It's a dream come true, especially with this team. I've been saying it all along -- they have been one of the most special teams. It's been a wonderful experience through the whole season."

The Aggies became the seventh team in the history of the Division II Softball Championship to go undefeated in tournament play.

While Churchwell was performing her heroics in the semifinals for UC Davis, GC&SU advanced to the title game with a win over North Dakota State, 2-0. Jennifer Joiner gave GC&SU three wins in the tournament finals.

Churchwell was joined on the all-tournament team by fellow Aggies Borrelli, Rosson and Shelly Malbon. GC&SU placed Joni Frei, Aundrea Baker and Joiner on the team. Liz Hunt, Tiffani Craft and Jennifer Survant were honored from St. Mary's (Texas), while Shippensburg's Beth Rudai and North Dakota State's Lindsay Graham and Molly Pufall also were recognized.
