Individual champion Celedonio Rodriguez led an Adams State pack that claimed five of the top 13 scoring positions and captured the Grizzlies' first Division II Men's Cross Country Championships team title since 1998.

The victory is Adams State's fifth since moving into NCAA Division II in 1992 and 17th in national competition. The men joined Adams State's women in sweeping the 2003 Division II team championships.

The Grizzlies outdistanced Abilene Christian, which finished as runner-up for the fourth straight year, and Harding, whose Jacob Rotich and Peter Kosgei finished second and third individually to lead the Bison to their best finish. Cal State Chico edged defending champion Western State, winner of the last four team titles, for fourth place.

Rodriguez cruised across the finish line of the 10,000-meter course November 22 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with a time of 30:25.6 -- 14 seconds ahead of Harding's Rotich and 21 seconds ahead of Kosgei. The senior also was the Grizzlies' top finisher at the 2002 championships, when he finished fifth individually, and the victory earned Rodriguez his eighth all-American citation in cross country and track.

"The feeling is euphoric," Rodriguez said of the victory. "There is no way to explain it and nothing compares to it."

Adams State senior Matthew Levassiur and junior Mohamed Aden claimed the seventh and eighth scoring positions in individual competition, and junior Joshua Merrick and senior Enrique Guerrero also finished among the top 13 scorers to compile the team's winning tally of 40 points. The Grizzlies' other two runners -- redshirt freshmen Jesus Solis and Derek Yorek -- also finished among the top 30 runners to claim all-America honors.

"The men were awesome," said Adams State coach Damon Martin, who now has coached teams to 11 NCAA titles, including nine women's championships. "The way they won was impressive and it showed a lot of heart."

Martin, who also coached women's teams to three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics titles, was named Division II coach of the year in both men's and women's cross country. Rodriguez is the 45th individual champion Martin has coached in cross country and track.

The Grizzlies finished the season unbeaten through three invitational meets, the conference and regional championships, and the national meet.
