The NCAA News

Milestones: The Stonehill College women's basketball team picked up the program's 600th all-time victory January 8 with a 71-59 triumph over Saint Anselm College. Stonehill, which has competed in women's basketball for 32 seasons, is the 10th Division II program to reach 600 wins. It has posted 31 consecutive winning seasons ... Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball coach Gene Steinmeyer won her 400th collegiate game January 11 when the Bearcats defeated Missouri Southern State College.

Facilities: Florida Gulf Coast University has opened Alico Arena, a 120,000 square-foot facility that will seat 4,500. It includes a sports and wellness fitness center, an auxiliary gymnasium, teaching classrooms, hospitality rooms, luxury suites and conference rooms. The project was substantially underwritten by a $5 million gift from Alico, Inc.

Sports sponsorship: St. Andrews Presbyterian College will add women's golf, women's lacrosse and men's tennis to its athletics program in 2003-04. Jason Hughes, who was named men's golf coach in August 2002, also will lead the women's program. With the addition of the three sports, St. Andrews Presbyterian will field 15 athletics teams in 2003-04.

Miscellaneous: The Mississippi College Board voted January 16 to terminate the intercollegiate athletics program at Mississippi University for Women. President Claudia Limbert said the move will enable the institution to redirect money to campus recreation programs and toward attracting more students. Mississippi University for Women, a member of the Gulf South Conference, has about 50 student-athletes competing in women's basketball, softball, volleyball and tennis. The institution will honor all existing athletics grants-in-aid.
