Facilities: Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will name its nearly completed softball stadium for longtime Southern Illinois athletics administrator Charlotte West, one of the nation's pioneers in women's athletics. Dedication of Charlotte West Stadium will be March 1. West retired as the school's associate athletics director in 1998 after 42 years as a faculty member, coach and administrator. "This is something I never expected in my lifetime," West said. "I'm very humbled by it." The school also named the softball field in honor of Carbondale businessman Barrett Rochman, a Southern Illinois alumnus and significant annual contributor to the softball program.

Milestones: University of Utah men's basketball coach Rick Majerus won his 300th game at the school when his squad beat Colorado State University, 71-66, February 8. Majerus, who reached the plateau in his 14th season at Utah, joins Vadal Peterson (385) and Jack Gardner (339) as Utah coaches with 300 wins. Utah is the third men's basketball program to have had three coaches win 300 games at the same school. The other two are the University of Kansas (Phog Allen, Ted Owens and current coach Roy Williams) and Division III's College of Wooster (E.M. "Mose" Hole, Al Van Wie and current coach Steve Moore) ... University of Jacksonville men's basketball coach Hugh Durham coached in his 1,000th game February 15. As a reward, his Dolphins beat Florida Atlantic University, 89-54. Durham became just the fifth active Division I coach (17th all-time) to reach 1,000 career games ... Texas Tech University women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp won her 500th game February 19 in a 59-48 victory over the University of Oklahoma. Sharp is the 22nd Division I women's coach to reach the 500-victory mark. "I'm really proud of this milestone for the program, because 500 wins at one program in this day and time is a big thing," Sharp said afterward. Sharp's record after the game stood at 500-156 in 21 seasons with the Lady Raiders ... Baylor University baseball coach Steve Smith won his 300th game February 19 when his Bears defeated the University of Arizona, 11-9.
