McPhee joins Board, four added to Management Council

One new member has been named to the Division I Board of Directors and four new members have joined the Division I Management Council.

Sidney McPhee, president of Middle Tennessee State University, will serve a term on the Board of Directors extending through April 2007.

New members of the Management Council are: Beth Chapman, associate commissioner of the Southland Conference, who will serve until January 2005; Steve Holton, director of athletics at Northern Arizona University, who will serve until January 2006; Jon Steinbrecher, commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference, who will serve until January 2004; and John Suarez, director of athletics at Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus, whose term runs through January 2006.

Following are biographical sketches of the new members:

McPhee

McPhee is the 10th president at Middle Tennessee State. He previously served as executive vice-chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents and has held various administrative positions at the University of Memphis and the University of Louisville.

This past year, he was appointed by President Bush to serve a six-year term on the National Council for the Humanities. McPhee also is involved in the community, serving on numerous boards, including the Middle Tennessee Council Boy Scouts of America Executive Board, the Rutherford County American Heart Association Board and the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Executive Board.

McPhee earned a bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M University, a master's degree from the University of Miami (Florida), and a doctorate from Oklahoma State University. He is also a graduate of the Harvard University Management Development Program, as well as other professional development programs.

Chapman

Chapman is in her eighth year with the Southland Conference, having been promoted to associate commissioner in July 2000 after four years as assistant commissioner. She also has served as legal counsel for the conference since 1998.

She previously worked as an attorney for law firms in Texas and Kansas, and worked in the compliance office at Texas A&M University, College Station, before attending law school.

In addition to her work with the Management Council, Chapman is a member of the NCAA Satisfactory-Progress Waivers Committee and chairs the NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship Committee. She also serves as vice-president of the National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators.

Chapman has a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M and a law degree from Texas Tech University.

Holton

Holton, whose career in athletics began in 1981, is entering his 10th year as director of athletics at Northern Arizona University. He also is a member of the Division I-AA Football West Region Advisory Committee.

He began his career as an administrative assistant at the University of Michigan in 1981 before becoming director of marketing and promotions at the University of Houston for two years. He also worked in athletics at Long Beach State University.

Holton holds a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University and a master's degree from Ohio University.

Steinbrecher

Steinbrecher is in his first year as commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. He previously served nine years as commissioner of the Mid-Continent Conference.

Before being named Mid-Continent commissioner in 1994, Steinbrecher served the league in various positions, including as director of communications and as director of marketing. Before he joined the league in 1989, he served in athletics departments at Houston Baptist University; Indiana University, Bloomington; and Davidson College.

Steinbrecher earned his bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University and a master's degree from Ohio University. He received his doctorate degree from Indiana.

An all-conference and academic all-conference selection in football and a conference champion in tennis, Steinbrecher was named Valparaiso's and the Heartland Collegiate Conference's Student-Athlete of the Year in 1983.

Suarez

Suarez is in his seventh year as director of athletics at Long Island. He came to the school after three years as director of athletics at Mercer County College in New Jersey.

From 2001 to 2003, he was a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and in 2001 was named chair of the Northeast Conference athletics directors council.

Suarez received his bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus, and his master's degree from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
