It was a season of firsts for Clemson in men's golf. The Tigers were ranked first during the entire season in the college golf rankings, and they finished first in their conference tournament and in their regional. To top it off, Clemson's first-place finish in the Division I Men's Golf Championships was the school's first. The Tigers are the first team to win their conference tournament, the NCAA regional and the championship in the same year.
The Tigers beat Oklahoma State by two strokes in the tournament played at the Cowboys' home course of Karsten Creek May 27-30. UCLA finished third and Wake Forest and Florida tied for fourth.
"It was probably the hardest round of golf I think we've ever had to play," said Clemson coach Larry Penley. "We shoot 15 over par and still win? It was extremely tough."
Clemson's final-round 303 was the Tigers' highest score of the season.
D.J. Trahan, who decided not to turn professional last year and returned as a senior to help his team win its first title, turned in Clemson's best round with a 74. Jack Ferguson clinched the team championship with a par on the 18th hole. Ferguson, playing in his first NCAA championship, finished 19th individually after a final round 77. Trahan finished 22nd, his fourth top-25 championship finish.
"I'm not going to kid you, it's a lot of pressure; it takes a lot of guts," Trahan said. "This is a tough golf course."
Clemson and Oklahoma State began the day separated by only one stroke. The Cowboys took the lead after three holes, but Clemson fired 6-under as a team on the eighth and ninth holes combined, turning a four-shot deficit into a four-shot lead. The two teams remained close until Clemson managed a six-shot advantage with just two holes to play.
The individual champion was Alejandro Canizares, Arizona State freshman and son of Champions Tour golfer Jose Maria Canizares. Canizares shot a 77 in the first round, but found his game with a 70 and 71 in rounds two and three, respectively, to compile a 287 total.
Canizares began the final day six shots behind Auburn's Lee Williams. Williams was the leader after each of the first three days, but was outdone by Canizares' outgoing 69.
"I was just keeping my game and concentrating and not looking at the leaderboard," Canizares said. "I didn't know my chances. It's a long tournament. I made a good comeback and played well the last three days."
