The NCAA National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Committee has named its 2005, 2006 and 2007 sites for the Women's Frozen Four. The Whittemore Center in Durham, New Hampshire, was selected for 2005; Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis for 2006; and the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York, for 2007.
"The committee is excited to have these three fabulous venues lined up to host the Women's Frozen Four," said Carolyn Campbell-McGovern, committee chair and senior associate director for the Ivy Group. "The previous tournaments hosted by Minnesota and New Hampshire have been superb, and we are thrilled to bring this event to the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, another terrific site, in another great hockey town."
New Hampshire hosted the 2002 championship at the Whittemore Center, attracting more than 5,000 fans. The 2005 championship will be the first time the Women's Frozen Four has returned to a site since the championship began in 2001. The games are scheduled for March 25 and 27.
"We appreciate the opportunity to once again host the Women's Frozen Four," said Marty Scarano, athletics director at New Hampshire. "We thank NCAA members for their continued confidence in New Hampshire hosting a first-rate championship."
Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis hosted the inaugural Women's Frozen Four in 2001. The 2006 championship, to be played March 24 and 26, again will be hosted by the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
"Being selected to host the Women's Frozen Four is a huge honor for the University of Minnesota," said Minnesota head coach Laura Halldorson. "I'm sure that our department will put on a first-class event, and the fans will be treated to some incredible women's hockey."
St. Lawrence University and the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority will team up to host the 2007 championship. The Olympic Center in Lake Placid is known most notably as the site of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" when the United States upset Russia in the Olympics.
The 2003 championship is scheduled for the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, March 26 and 28.
